No the fuck it isn't, that has never been the case. Hand drawn animation has always been cheaper, it's just that CGI tends to have higher profits on average if they succeed. If they fail though, that's a massive hole in these company's pockets.

Hell, in general this series was never particularly a huge theater draw. The highest grossing film was Sponge out of Water, and even that was only 325 million. A decent amount of money mind you, considering its budget. But clearly not the box office juggernaut you're framing it as.
