They originally broke up because she was completely amoral. No real grasp of good or evil, just her own self-interest, and couldn't even understand that that was a problem. People tend to forget that Felicia was fucking nuts.

Peter wanted to make her an honest woman and that scared her. They've broken up plenty of times for similar reasons but it's always the same. Felicia isn't ready for a serious relationship like how Peter wants. And whenever she tries it doesn't work out.

I know Peter being an everyman is the meme we all hate, but at the end of the day Peter does want to settle down and start a family like a regular guy, and Felicia has never shown any interest in that.
Mary Jane at least received quite a lot of character development that pointed her in that direction. The totality of Felicia's development was making it so that she isn't an insane cunt.

That doesn't mean he always meant to. People's opinion change over time.
David Micheline is a prime example of this :
>You are also the author responsible for the marriage between Peter and Mary Jane, a story that is still epochal as it is controversial, both for its genesis and for the aftermath it has left. What do you remember about the process and the idea that led to that decision?
>Within days of accepting the writing assignment on Amazing Spider-Man, I was told that Stan Lee was going to get Peter and Mary Jane married in the newspaper comic strip–and that Marvel was going to follow suit in the comics. I hated it. I wanted to write the same character I had loved when I was a teenager: a young single guy with problems and courage, not an old married man. But Marvel was determined to get Peter and MJ married, so I decided to make the best of it and create a succesful married life for the couple, something that readers probably wouldn’t expect. And I surprised myself by having a great time writing Mr. & Mrs. Spider-Man!

Yeah Peter is pretty vanilla and traditional when it comes to romance. He did try to settle down with Felicia but she wasn't having that. And by the time she realized she did he was with MJ.

Still can't wrap my head around it. My first foray into comics was through the old Fox cartoons then years later reading from the beginning.
Growing up, getting married and having kids just seems like such a natural progression for him or any character, really. Figure at that point he trains his kids and the next generation of heroes and slowly fades into the background as they take over. Spin him off into another book like the old 'Peter Parker: Spider-Man' and have his son or daughter carry the main title. Maybe split between both.

Comics like their status quo. You can see there the old guard like Stan Lee tried to move things forward by having Peter marry MJ, but new blood writers didn't like it because they like Peter being a down on his luck everyman. So Peter can't be married, Aunt May isn't allowed to die while Peter deals with that, Peter can't have a stable income, and so on. Essentially Peter B. Parker represents everything they don't want Peter to do.

Peter/MJ is like Supes/Lois. It's such a natural pairing that you don't even need to argue it. The most unpopular Spidey story to this day was dedicated to arguing against it.

Peter/Felicia is a ship that is perpetually something you need to debate, which makes it inherently less natural. All she is is a virtue test that reaffirms how much Peter is devoted to MJ. Believing otherwise is just cope.

They just never work as a couple long term. They're simply friends with benefits and I think that's fine. Felicia and Peter can say they love each other and think of marrying in the future but it'll never happen because reality sets in and one of them breaks it off, usually Felicia.

There was a small sliver of time when she would have been good for Pete, but he was already married to MJ.
Nowadays it's because she will never be allowed to stop being a thief and go full hero. Black Cat must always be Marvel's Catwoman. Plus they need her for the pride issues.
