He legitimately thought he was making something good and that fans would love it. The negative backlash geniunely caught him off gaurd. Killing He-man and Skelator and focusing on Teela was 100% his idea though. To him this was a mature and subversive decision that he thought fans would love because unlike the original it was treating the characters like real people and dealing with real consequences and it finally becoming a real show you can dig your teeth into. He didn't realize people just wanted to relive their childhood and watch muscular dudes beat the shit out of each other with more gore and violence added at most

>>149341306
No. He actually said he thought the show was stupid baby shit when it came out, he was a teenager when it came it out so he was not in the target demo, and he never actually properly watched it untill he was he was approached to do the show.

What a room temp IQ take. People wanted to watch the main characters engage in those mature and real consequences, not a tired girlboss that shit all over the characters people had loved growing up.

It would be like making the king of the hill relaunch entirely about Luanne, and killing Hank in the first episode, then wondering why the original fans think it was shit.

He's right, the 80s one was a bunch of corny slapstick with zero action and continuity. The early 2000 reboot was the same. Anime was 10000x better than any Heman show.

His adaptation was an improvement, but unfortunately the fans whined about it.

I'm mad that the writers completely disregarded episodes like https://youtu.be/ZvFVodMkU8M
Like come on Kevin, Queen Marlena knew Adam was He-Man and you couldn't even be bothered to do research? What did you just watch the first 3 episodes and went "yep that's enough material for a reboot"

Even someone as me who doesn't like Filmation knew that.

Why didn't they give Teela a cool motif or colorful battle armor if they wanted her in the front? She just looks like a random boot camp grunt in this, totally lost among the noise of the colorful, strongly themed residents of Eternia.
You don't even have to make her attractive. Just make her stand out.

It's no different from everything else he has made since 2017 or so.

The man has totally 100% lost his edge and became a social media addicted schizo that only makes politically correct, perfectly safe, slop. The man now writes only safe and correct Twitter talking points into movies and they are fucking awful. He made a Jay and Silent Bob remake that stars waaaaay less hot girls (with a hijab muslim friend) on an adventure. He made a Clerks 3 with no real jokes at all, just Dante being more miserable and dying.

It's all strong women and bad white men in everything now.

>I think i could be incredibly reverent while like taking the story forward and stuff

https://variety.com/2021/tv/news/he-man-masters-of-the-universe-revelation-kevin-smith-netflix-1235026831/

>Smith had authored comic book runs of Marvel’s “Daredevil” and DC’s “Green Arrow” in the late 1990s and early 2000s that David greatly admired for their fealty to the subject matter, with none of Smith’s signature dick and fart jokes.

>David and Biaselli wanted Smith to do the same with “He-Man”: Take the show from the 1980s and continue that story with those characters, only now for an adult audience. Finally, He-Man and Skeletor could really do battle, and one — or both! — could get stabbed.

>Smith loved the idea.

>“[Biaselli’s] like, ‘I yearn to watch the show I thought I was watching in childhood. That’s what I’m looking for here, the same show, but people can die. Can you do that?'” Smith said. “And I was like, ‘That’s the only thing I can do.’”

>“Honestly, if it had been anything else outside of that — if they were like, ‘We want you to reinvent this for the modern age’ — that would have scared me off creatively, because I’m not that inventive,” Smith continued. “And also, because I know what a fan base reacts like when they don’t get the thing they grew up watching. You think I’m gonna be the fall guy for that? If I’m involved in a thing, it’s going to be true to what it is. It’s gonna be true to the franchise.”

The problem was hiring him in the first place.

I can see how it happened too, it's pretty clear. Hollywood execs see this franchise as something that really attracts geeky nerd types. So they thought they were striking gold by hiring the geeky nerd director to helm it. While never ever paying any attention to the fact that Silent Bob has never once written or had a single thing to do with high concept fantasy or action. They just connected nerd director to nerd franchise, and he was 100% incompatible with it and would only ever fuck it up.

To be fair, the show seemed to be on Adam's side regarding that point (i.e. Adam died a hero and Teela is acting like a stupid selfish asshole). But then, one scene acknowledging that your main character is a stupid selfish asshole doesn't make watching her be a stupid selfish asshole for the rest of the show any less insufferable.

It's mostly how 80s movies played out, but that was also a budget thing. They just did not hve the budget to have a guy in costume doing cool stunts and ripping apart monster all movie, they could only afford maybe 15 minutes of that. So it was saved for the final act.

....but this is a goddamn cartoon, and they hired a guy who is all about 80s movies to make it. And he made an 80s action flick that only has the cool guy in costume doing cool shit in the final part of the final act. It's all he knows and what he does.

The best thing he ever did was reading Swamp Thing on his podcast.

Mindbroken men feel the need to subvert and destroy their past in order to feel like they've actually become a different, supposedly "better" person than they were before. Also, being a malnourished vegans makes people fucking crazy

>he thought he was doing something cool and mature
>by being subversive and deceptive
Yeah there's a reason this didn't gel with audiences and it's because it's not mature or clever or cool: It's dickless writing by a creatively bankrupt faggot who thinks being surprising is the same thing as being good, because he refused to understand that surprises and subversion have to still be interesting to work. They are not inherently good on their own.

I didn't love it, but it had enough interesting ideas of its own, along with a lot of changes to the basic formula to make it a genuinely interesting take on the He-Man concept. Kevin Smith's stillborn faux-anime bullshit killed any chance for it to get noticed.

It's very telling that the only thing on his mind, the sole motivator, his guiding mission statement when being offered to work on a fucking He-Man cartoon is
>FINALLY! THESE CHARACTERS CAN GET STABBED AND DIE!! I'VE ALWAYS WANTED THESE CHARACTERS TO DIE! I CAN'T WAIT TO HAVE THESE CHARACTERS GET STABBED SO THEY CAN DIE!!

What a fucking psychopath.

It's a double edged sword

Revelation drawing all the ire shielded it from discourse about Teela and Krass that it would not have deserved

However I think that because the show was good it would have weathered that just fine as opposed to Revelation, which was bad and thus had to take the usual stance of bad products in framing that all the hate is just from grifter tourists and not real fans

It's because he wrote a handful of capeshit comics also. Not even that many, and not even ones that fans remember or revere in any particular way. The people in charge of these sorts of decisions think nerdshit is all interchangeable, so a guy who likes comics and also has hollywood experience is sure-thing, great choice to work on some 80s nostalgia cartoon revival.

It really sucks man. The show had some great stuff going on with it's Skeletor and Eternia and even paid homage to the original series with stuff. But Netflix really did it no favors by not advertising it and really screwed it by releasing it the next month after the other one. I'm at least glad the show we got was great but it's clear they had more ideas to play with.

I don't see how killing off He-Man in the first episode makes the show "mature" or "realistic" or "genuinely consequential".....
