Most characters in the show didn't look goth and he never had trouble distinguishing between goth and non-goth characters in his even more stylized old black and white comics. Just say you got older and wanted to make them act more like cutsey sitcom kids.

also yeah, post-jenny gold(((berg))) collaboration jhonen sucks. he gave up the cool angular look for bean mouth doublechin quirkblobs, which is infinitely more embarrassing than the broody goth look
also, call it resume milking, but steve ressel really pushed the crew on zim to do crazy shit, that hasnt been repeated since. Jhonen gets too much credit when most of his input was arbitrary bullshit (like gir humor)
Steve being missing in action for the movie is the frosting on the shit sundae. Even Jhonen admitted the movie was awful not too long after it aired (if there's no available source on this and somebody cares, i'll dig through my recordings and find the audio clip of him saying so during the streaming event he did on twitch to promote the anniversary art book)

i mean, kinda. i feel he intended Gaz to be more than just a goth, but at that time Jhonen was unable to draw non goth humans. It's true he regrets not using Gaz in a more creative way in the original run, and since Gaz likes videogames a lot, making her a gamer was just logical. There was literally no indication of their ethnicity for the entire run of the show, but after the fact he decided to retcon Dib into being tanner to make him more of a self-insert as Mexican. And it just comes off as a coloring error, because neither Gaz nor Membrane seem as tan as Dib was made.

Finally, someone gets it.
Jhonen's awful redesigns aside, the show was missing that special sauce by not having any of the original storyboarders or other crew back except the musician. That's why the colors are so off and the layouts were lackluster. Plus the animation is just plain worse but I'm sure tech has changed a lot in 20 years (and not for the better)
