I get the notion, I get the meme but these Schumacher movies are actually bad.
Colorful costumes and set design and a campy tone in and of itself does not a good film make and that seems to be the reason they've been getting hyped up. The writing is awful, not even bad campy good.

I recall some youtuber saying there was some studio interference Joel wasn't a fan of, so you may want to compare notes before you settle on that contrarian take.

Yeah? All of Schumacher's other movies are pretty serious or at least on the darker side. Ironically it was WB making him gay it up. He had a story about how WB didn't think Nicole Kidman was sexy enough for her role in Forever, so he had her put in the low cut dress to show off her cleavage and had her perform very flirty and breathy to really sex her up
Even the stuff like the nipples and the codpiece came from the costume designers.

Forever is 6/10 at worst and that's mostly Carrey overacting and dragging everything down. Kilmer was also the first Batman to actually get in shape for the role and not just rely on foam rubber abs.

Studio interference. Forever did SO well that the studio wanted production started the week that the box office numbers came in, Script was cranked out, toy company had more say in the movie than they ever have in any superhero property since(Hasbro arguably had more of a say in the movie than in the DCAU), WB wanting to lean harder into the humor and lightheartedness after Forever did better than Returns. It's a too many cooks situation.

It's still funny to me how often the discourse brings up the rubber suits, nipples etc as some kind of gay marker when the REAL gay content in the Schumacher movies was simply any time Chris O'Donnell was on screen.

It's not campy, it's epic and dramatic and brooding. You're confusing camp with cheese, and at this point literally anything can be considered "cheesey" as it's just become another code for "thing i dislike"

anon, the epic dramatic brooding nature of the panel is precisely what makes it camp. this is really just the distinction between high and low camp. this is high camp; it is serious but exaggerated and theatrical on purpose. that's what the term means.

I just checked and that anon's surprisingly right.
It seems the notion of high camp was discarded over time and low camp, ironic or otherwise, came to be what people assume camp means by default.

Again you're conflating campy with cheesey, they're not synonyms. Campy is something done flamboyant and tongue in cheek, it's being knowingly stupid. Dark Batman is self serious, played straight for no laughs, and melodramatic, literally the polar opposite of camp

Batman Forever was decent. Batman and Robin is an actual legitimate dumpster fire of baby diapers. Legitimately a worse movie than the original Super Mario Bros.

It's melodramatic, not campy. Campy means something that is gratuitous, exaggerated, or theatrical in a way that is deliberately ironic and/or self aware. That other anon is also right, however, in that "campy" has been co-opted by literal faggots as a way of infiltrating fanbases by labelling anything remotely silly in any way, either conceptually or literally, into being "gay coded".

I liked the cyberpunk-meets-Art Deco Gotham in Batman Forever far more than Burton's GOTHam or any other live-action version. I wish comic books used a similar version of Gotham more often.
