Its finally here! The long awaited sequel to Beneath the Trees, with the continued adventures of our favorite killer teddy bear!
.....
Who is barely in this issue. But we meet our new protagonist (antagonist?) and get some world building, so its all good.
Give a bump if you're reading.
Jumping right into the gore this time.
>>149349204Our new star, Monica.
Thanks, Boco!!!! Now no one will ever tell you to shut the fuck up!
>>149349249Oh no! They killed Mordecai!
>>149349269>Why do we treat our customers at PopCopy this way? Cuz fuck 'em, thats why!
>>149349297I hope that cow doesn't have hooves. That would be very inconvenient for a receptionist.
>>149349194 (OP)I'm usually interested more so with how this will end.
>>149349242The main character being a human proportioned duck is really emphasising how fucking large everyone else’s heads are. It must suck for her buying clothes when most tops have a neckline as wide as her shoulders.
>>149349320Its Massive Headwound Harry!
>>149349349Don't fuck with the duck.
>>149349357So if this is set in 1994, I can't decide if this Internet is too advanced or not advanced enough.
>>149349371Holiday ro-o-o-o-o-o-ad....
>>149349406Wait, Sam sent the message? I dunno man, that seems like stirring a hornet's nest. Or maybe she just wants Monica out of the way before she gets too loud.
>>149349430And thats it for this month! What kind of wacky antics will they get into next time?
If you liked it, go pick up a copy. Maybe we can get it another Eisner nom.
>>149349430is sam going to get gay with this duck
>>149349194 (OP)Do girls actually find fart jokes funny as Samantha strong?
>>149349460Sam is asexual, you know that.
>>149349430Cathy's fucked
>>149349471thats why she shit rainbow snakes in her mental breakdown introspection sequence, right? she's a closeted butch
>>149349498Man, if you can make any sense out of that drug trip scene more power to you.
>>149349486Seems like there wouldn't be much of a story if she just gets murdered straight away.
Her interaction with the street punks suggests she's got some good survival instincts. My guess is she gives a rusty and out of practice Sam the slip.
>>149349430>what all are you willing to do?Weird extra word typo aside, this line alone makes it sound like Sam isn’t planning to kill her, she wants to see if she can turn her into an accomplice because she’s getting too old (mid-50s at least) to do it all herself.
>>149349281George is too friendly. Poor bastard is going to end up dead for sure.
>>149349430>It was meGood literaly helps monsters like this and this author knows that.
>>149349458Wtf? Why is it a monthly release
>>149349826Uh, why wouldn't it be?
>>149349826Anon, how do you think comic books are normally published?
>>149349458>Walmart>BadSo the comic is set in the early 90s?
>>149349349>>149349357>Making the rapist thugs a hamster and a raccoon I’ll give the book credit. Furry comics usually make rapist wolves and big cats.
>>149349990>badIt's a completely neutral depiction of a big box store?
I like the new main character and I hope she wins when her alliance with Sam inevitably explodes.
>>1493499901994, actually.
>>149349269Holy shit those hips.
I think Sam wants her for pegging
This feels woke why are all the women powerful and independent and the men useless idiots or rapists
>>149349877He probably knows about the original book through webtoon and thought it was a webcomic which usually have a more weekly release
>>149349677No, that's not a typo; that's how people up north speak. I've got a Vermonter friend and she's used that expression herself.
>>149350284The main character, a woman, is irredeemably evil and the book goes out of its way to dissuade you from finding her in the right.
It does a better job of that than Dexter did, anyway.
>>149350284Did you even read the rest of the series or looking to just bait?
>>149349458Judging from this cover I assume the body parts will be under the store. There is definitely going to b a heist with Sam and Cathy.
>>149350384And yet the book protests all the men as dumb idiots still why is that? Could the writer not make her compelling without making men rapists and incels
>>149349463What are you even trying to say?
>>149350467Yeah, you're baiting.
Judging from this cover I assume the body parts will be under the store. There is definitely going to b a heist with Sam and Monica.
>>149349430I hope Sam gets caught. She is clearly trying to manipulate Monica for some reason instead of outright killing her.
>>149350506Spoilers for the first series: At least some of the bodies were exhumed by the antagonist of the first comic, so you may be right about that, though I think it's more likely those parts were collected by law enforcement.
>>149350284Look man you've got Nightwing for your fix of thick birdguy beating thugs with a stick. Some folks prefer birdgals
>>149350527My assumption is she wants to frame Monica for the murders, including that of her own brother.
>>149350384This is what worries me for the sequel, pure evil villains are rare enough but a pure evil main protagonist would be the jackpot, if Samantha gets even an ounce of pathos it's over
>>149350548We've had two series already and I don't think it's lost the edge yet. I mean, the books help you understand Sam--she's clearly mentally unwell--but you don't empathize with her. A touch of sympathy for her illness is as much as you're allowed to feel before she does something disgusting again that turns you against her.
>>149350592It be better if the book didn't go out of its way to make all the men in the book idiots, and rapists
>>149350641It'd be better if your masculinity weren't so fragile that you can't handle fictional men being cast in a negative light, but then here we are.
>>149350592>We've had two series alreadyI just saw this comic for the first time the other day and read through what I could find, is pic related (which as an image also goes fucking hard) the last issue before the one itt or am I missing some? Don't want to spoil anything for myself.
>>149350672The first series is six issues. There was also a one shot prequel that, if I remember right, is included int he trade paperback. If not its online somewhere, although its not vital to read.
>>149350384>>149349471>The main character, a woman, is irredeemably evil and the book goes out of its way to dissuade you from finding her in the right>Sam is asexual, you know that.Doesn’t the first book implied she has a soft spot for kids? Female serial killers in fiction tend to rape babies out of worthy men.
>>149350684So the one you storytimed itt is the first issue of the 2nd series? I was just a bit confused by that anon's use of the term "already" suggesting there had already been a 2nd series, not that this was the start of it.
Anyway, I do like this a lot. Any other comics with a similar feel?
>>149350747Not really. She had no qualms with killing an old woman she befriended for 40 years. Her only concern is getting caught.
>>149350771Correct, this is issue 1 of the sequel. Issue 2 in August.
>>149350641you are a pussy hot damn
>>149350641If you really think this book is about glamorizing the women, you clearly skipped the issue with Cherry FUCKING Gherkins.
>>149349194 (OP)How can you storytime a sequel without doing the same with the original?
>>149350809/co/ has storytimed it in the past, if thats what you mean.
>>149350774That still isn’t an argument against the idea of raping a man to get pregnant.

>>149350845He not wrong, Like Alma from fear 2. Female serial killer in fiction tend to rape a man to get knocked up. It’s a whole trope. Usually a cop smart enough to track them down. Unless Samantha is shown killing a child. Her wanting a kid is still possibility.
>>149349362In 1994 it would've been a usenet newsgroup, message boards like that didn't really exist yet. The web itself was incredibly niche in '94 and didn't really become widely used till a couple years later.
>>149350937>>149350845>>149349471Funny enough. There is a chat bot of Samantha strong. If you playing a male character that tries to kill her. She ties you up to use you as a personal sperm bank before killing you.
>>149350937Better get storytiming the original series then.
>>149350747>Doesn’t the first book implied she has a soft spot for kids?I don't remember that at all. The funeral sequence makes it pretty clear she's a sociopath. If anything, I'd think she'd only avoid avoid killing kids because it'd be over too quick since she pretty clearly gets a lot of entertainment out of dismembering the bodies.
>>149351033>>149350953>>149350845Serious question. Would raping a man to get a child make be too evil for Samantha ? If Sam has a kid. I picture her using being a single mom as cover similar to Dexter in the books.
>>149349677Its a northern accent. Its pretty proper if you ask me
>>149349826JFC you're a fucking retard
>>149350299No, I'm willing to bet he's a twitter tourist/newfag who found out about the comic through the YouTube video covering it
>>149351033Pragmatism too. A child's disappearance would get investigated with more dedication than an adult's.
>>149351080I just don't think it'd be in character for her to want a child since it''d interfere too much with her activities. Those are all she cares about; even her "friends" dying just bothered her because of the disruption of her routine.
At least now the threads will have someone actually kinda hot to lust over instead of pretending Sam's fridge ass is attractive.
New duckgirl got them legs.

>>149352108Monica will probably die, but something tells me she won't go down so easily.
She seems just psychotic as Sam, except she placed that energy towards trying to figure out what happened to her brother.
I could see the story turning into something like Monster, where two cold blooded individuals hunt each other to see which one slips up first.
>>149349430>Or maybe she just wants Monica out of the way before she gets too loud.Monica is spamming "Have you seen this long-dead dude" fliers in a city far far away. Sam was definitely not thinking "she's getting too close."
>>149352104>I've got shit to do (not in the woods, honest)Sure thing, Sam.
>>149351980>digital security cameras in 1986
I didn't bother with this book either, it's just more furry bait. As usual most furries tend to fall for media that's bad for them and they even like it.
My real issue is how the fuck did the killer manage to rig up the sail on the parade float so it broke down and exposed the body at just the right time for the whole town to see it? That's something straight out of Saw.
>>149352359>Furry baitIt is a riff on old storybook art, anon. Do you have furries on the brain or something?
>>149352368This comic is gore porn, the writer made it just to hurt people, just like Beastars and Bojack Horseman.
>>149349430>Is it your brother?>It was me.She just really had to phrase it that way, huh?
>>149352007>Your kindWhat Miss Piggy mean by this

>>149349194 (OP)Shut the fuck up Boco
>>149350506Considering she runs a small hardware store, she probably isn’t fond of a major superstore coming into town to eat up the business of the local mom and pop stores. So revenge against the store may end up being her real motivations here.
Hell yeah, didn't even know there was gonna be a sequel.
Thanks, Boco.
>>149351533Seeing as it’s been 8 years and these were the only kid characters we were really introduced to, I wonder if we will see them in their teens in the sequel. Every other character would be the same with some grey hairs, but they would have more drastic design changes.

>>149352432>Beastars>made to hurt peopleIt goes to shit when Melon shows up and turns it into a battle manga, but it's still mostly just awkward teenage romance at the surface with only occasional violent bits, but showing the younger generation starting to push back against the old cruel ways.
>>149349406This is so stupid. She's been in the city for 8 years, wasting her life away, while the evidence was so close to her. She could've easily been visiting these little towns once every two or three years.

>>149353282She had no reason to look outside the city. Presumably her brother didn't have any connections outside the city and would have no reason to leave. The only thing I find hard to believe is that Monica hadn't heard of the serial killings in Sam's town until then. That case would have definitely made national headlines and descriptions of the victims would have also been made public and FBI or whoever would have tried combining through missing persons reports to try and identify the bodies which would have brought them in contact with Monica.
Now that is a big old plot hole. We're meant to believe no one but the local sheriff department investigated a serial killer case that involved multiple unidentified victims who weren't from the that town and a killer who lived out of town and who may have possibly been killing for years and only recently started in their town as far as they know. It was also a highly televised case. And the fbi didn't bother to send at least one agent to see what's up? Now that's bullshit.
>>149354019>Tell me about Sam>Why does she wear the goggles?
>>149349430My guess is that she's bored. Serial killers often switch up their game and escalate their killings when they find that their routines no longer give them the same thrill or fulfillment as it used to.
A lot of them find it thrilling to fuck with the police and and taunt them thinking they can't be caught. I think when Sam was dealing with the mouse guy amd coming close to being caught but getting away with it gave her life a sense of excitement she had never felt before or since. So now she's probably looking to recreate that cat and mouse game with someone and Monica is first person who's taken her bait. I'm guessing Monica isn't the first person Sam has tried this with.
Nice of the guy/they them that made this to let his 13 year old son write the dialogue.

Also its weird they nevr called in the fbi. The problem was that he was gonna take Sam down with him
>>149354134Mouse guy was immature. He did what he did not for self-satisfaction, but for the approval of others.
>>149354161The FBI really should have been called in the second they ID'd Sam as a major suspect and she went on the run. A deranged serial killer like that would be country-wide news and the President would be making the call to get this dealt with immediately.
What would have really been retarded from the mouse is if he kept on killing after Sam had been caught as she could just shrug and say "told you it wasn't me".
>>149354161Eh, depends on how many bodies they found. The more confirmed victims there are the more dangerous they’re considered, and therefore a bigger priority.

>>149354233Usually it's the local law enforcement that decide when to call in the FBI. Once they feel the case is too much for them to handle with their limited resources they can and usually do make a call.to the FBI for help. Of course the FBI sometimes does step in with out a call if the case becomes big enough to get their attention.
I'd say once they discovered the body parts in the paint cans and realized there were bodies hidden all over the Forrest that that would have been the time to call them in. Even when nigel was killed the investigation wouldn't stop there. They clearly need help identifying the victims. The fact they never did implies the sheriff is cartoonishly incompetent.

>>149354505>>149354529For me, I think it's more about being gripped by the story and wanting to find out what happens next rather than hoping for any particular outcome. I didn't find it predictable (ymmv) and therefore quite exciting, there's also something about the idea of terrible darkness lurking behind the mundane world that appeals to me.
As for Sam herself, she's certainly a legit psycho with zero empathy and what she does is horrible but she's still kind of fascinating. Everybody has their calling in life, Sam's just happens to be to cut people up into manageable chunks and file them neatly. Also the art is really nice.
>there are people actually who live near the woods
>there are people that unironically go hiking in the woods
Even in modern day, killers make dumping bodies in there without getting found look easy. Why the fuck do people purposefully live around an endless maze of trees miles from civilization?
>>149354805You wouldn't get it, city slicker.
>>149354805Most people aren't cunted in the head and looking to murder other people to get their rocks off, Nigel.
>>149354805Rural areas are statistically much, much safer than urban ones. There are fewer people and they tend to know the people in their communities which makes them less likely to murder each other and when they do, a lot easier to determine whodunit than in a city of millions of people. Are there some rural folks who murder hikers? Unquestionably, given all the people who have gone missing over the years. But those hikers don’t tend to be locals either, so you’re actually increasing your chances of murder all around by living in a city.
>>149354884>live in city >get murdered by city scum>move to rural area>get murdered for being an outsider Citysters.. we lost...
>>149354558Im a spaniard, tipping people is considered rude, like you are belitting them and you think yourself superior.

>>149353089She's going grey, you cave bat.
>>149350937>Female serial killer in fiction tend to rape a man to get knocked up.It just sounds like a fetish more than anything just being injected in for shock value.
>>149354392Thank you very much, I really enjoyed this storytime.
>>149353282There are a lot of faults and nitpicks I can find with the series but I'll give them that one. While it's possible she could have made her way out there it would take awhile to really feel like you've canvassed the city and looked everywhere, if you could ever feel like that. But even if she was going out of the city to surrounding areas they obviously live in NYC and Woodbrook is in Vermont a state or two over. There's a lot of other little small towns she would deal with first on top of needing to stay on top of the police departments in the city. I doubt she would ever make it that far out to stu.ble on Woodbrook without something to give her a nudge.
Now I will say, with how much she was on the internet and searching up serial killer stuff it would have made sense for her to find out about the events of the first book long before now and gone searching due to that. It would be one thing if they were just regular murders or if her brother was an older victim but there was a guy who got split in half and crucified in a way that made his body get unexpectedly revealed to the entire town and an interstate manhunt for who they thought was the killer/a bif switcheroo at the end. That would be a huge case that people would've been talking about and it happened pretty much exactly when her brother disappeared so she should've zeroed in on that like a red hot beacon.
>>149349603That might be the case based on the cover. You never know but I'm guessing Sam will try to get the jump on her with some Curare and she'll unexpectedly fight back and chase Sam off. Whether the rest of the story is them in the woods or the woman manages to escape and we get something more chaotic remains to be seen
>>149350284It's subtle woke, just like the creator isn't out about being jewish but you can tell if you pay attention.
>>149355874Pretty sure writing a terrible remorseless killer that happens to be female isn’t “woke”.
>>149350540Perhaps but if Monica didn't even live in NYC until after her brother disappeared I'm going to assume she has a pretty good alibi for literally every murder.
>>149350747That's just an assumption based on the fact we saw Nigel make an attempt at killing a kid but out of all of Sam's victims (of which we've only seen 2-3) they were portrayed as at least young adults. She's killed over 40+ people, though, and we don't have any evidence that one or more of them AREN'T kids.

I'm sure a lot of her victims family's looked for the first few months to a year if they were local, then petered out but she kept on it vigorously for 8 years trying to keep it at the forefront of literally every police strong mind. If ever it somehow got connected to the body parts they had in Woodbrook it would be over. That said, I don't know how Sam would know about that other than maybe seeing the fliers and getting upset at how long they persisted so maybe stumbling on the story online and just deciding fuck it makes the most sense? Even though they're a loner and a serial killer, though I find it a little much to think Sam was on the internet like that in 1994. Especially living in a small town. Maybe if this was 2008 or later.

>>149354529If it ends with Sam getting away with everything, it's going to be incredibly unsatisfying. Like the ending to Lost. With the duck chick investigating her brother this early into the series, it's pretty likely the duck chick is either gonna get killed by Sam, or framed by Sam and potentially killed by the police. If the duck chick is killed, I'm hoping that she at least permanently injures Sam in such a way that Sam can't really kidnap and murder people anymore. So at first Sam is like "whew I got away with it", but then comes to the horrifying realization that she can't murderhobo people anymore, which means she's slowly going to go insane from the voices in her head.
Of course thematically I like the idea of Sam going to the city to kidnap someone, only to get hit by a bus or someone running a red light. After all, the city just swallows up people sometimes. How perfect would it be for her to go out in such an inglorious way.

>>149358283If the duck dies in #2, or hell any point before the last couple of pages of #6, I think people will just drop Rite of Spring. Her revenge is the entire story here, not Sam just casually cleaning up every loose thread after 8 years of doing nothing.
The best ending is Monica killing Sam. The second best ending is Sam killing Monica, but Monica dying laughing because she causes all of Sam’s lies to cave in and she dies knowing Sam will face justice for her crimes. SamWinsLol will be bullshit.

I thought he was going to wind up being a killer but turns out he really was just a random kind german guy.
>>149359135If Monica dies, thats the point the FBI should get invovled because she would probably make sure Sam is found out.
>>149359120The only hope you can have with Sam is that she thinks you are an interesting person. If you are boring. She will kill you without a second thought. If Samantha thinks you are funny. She targets someone else over you. Psychopaths can still find people funny and fascinating. I find it interesting Samantha don’t like to torture. She could’ve cause a lot of prolonged pain with many of her victim but she didn’t.
>>149359220Maybe she is also on the autism spectrum? Her monologue about organizing body parts and how it calms her just seems like some kind of twisted way of stimming.
>>149359220>>149359287She's a sociopath, not a sadist. Murder is her way of reorganizing the contents of her mind. I don't think she gets much of a kick out of the killing itself; it's more a purging of her mind's black poison, which allows her to regain a sense of orderly calm.
>>149359135Monica dying in any way is going to result in an investigation into Sam's small town. Sam's playing a dangerous game because the best serial killers solely kill random victims, and she's creating ties between her and Monica.
>>149358283>>149359135>>149359193Whether or not Sam is ever cuaght really depends on whether theres gonna be a sequel or not. As far as I know the first part was a surprise hit so I'd be surprised if the author ever planned Sam's downfall. If there's gonna be a sequel then this middle part should be used to set up the pieces for Sam's eventual capture in a hypothetical part 3. Monica should do something that will ensure Sam is eventually caught even if she does die in the process.
>>149359369Yeah, it seems to be really about cutting up and making the bodies “neat and tidy” for her, the way she likes everything else to be. She’s developed a way to kill which is relatively painless and drains them of blood so they’re “clean” when she does so. The distress her victims feel upon being kidnapped initially generally means nothing to her, but then she does display a certain amount of pleasure watching the feral bear kill and in taunting Nigel at the end of the first volume. I wonder if that’s a new feeling for her, could be that those experiences have led her to enjoy a bit of sadism and that’s why she’s lured Monica in.
I wonder if she would have been happy being a coroner and getting to cut up already dead bodies? Probably not orderly enough for her and she wouldn’t have total control over the body.
>>149359429It's not uncommon for serial killers to get caught because they get sloppy believing in their own invincibility. BTK got caught after 30 years because he sent a letter to a newspaper practically doxxing himself and telling the FBI he was gonna kill.again. The Atlanta child murderer was caught after police heard him dumping the body of a victim in the middle of a city wide manhunt for him.
So I can definitely see this as Sam getting sloppy in her old age amd buying into her own invincibility
>>149352482She's having fun
Maybe Sam wants to get caught but in her own fucked up way? Maybe she's dying but wants the world to know about her work before she takes.her last hibernation. Maybe its like Seven and she's wants to make some kind of statement to the world but needs someone to deliver that message because she is not planning on making it out alive.

>>149359377You know, I've never been quite clear on the difference. I thought psychopathy came about as a result of stress--a psychotic break?
>>149360471That’s kind of hot.
>>149361159I can field this. A practical distinction is that psychopaths are born, and tend to be more controlled and manipulative, while sociopaths are made, and tend to be more impulsive and volatile. A psychotic break isn't really related to either, as it's when a person loses their mental contact with reality and manifesting as hallucinations, delusions, disorganized thinking, and impaired insight. It's more a symptom of a disease than the disease itself--thing schizophrenic delusions.
What this means, weirdly enough, is that the titular character from Psycho isn't actually a psychopath, but a sociopath, although he does suffer from psychosis.
>>149361159Psychopaths are usually the way they are because they were born that way.
A sociopath comes about through circumstance.

>>149361899Anon, this takes place in the 90s, there are no air tags.
>>149361159Medically speaking, there isn't. Psychopath and sociopath are colloquial terms for people suffering from antisocial personality disorder, a neurosis with multiple symptoms that may or may not all be present.
