I love how often they swing in terms of competency.
Sometimes Jack is the boss of everything sometimes Lily is the surefooted one.
It allows for a feeling that there is no leader but just two kids having fun, although some might see it as bad character personalities since we are accustomed to characters who are exaggerated and stay that way but they are doing "moral" episodes so I'd say its passable

They are pretty close in their personalities they both have an unhinged side, but their differences also work. Jack is more take charge and willing to go in to danger, while Lily has to think things out. Lily is more of a planner, but not so far it stops her, she also seems less sure in herself at times compared to Jack's more confident self.

I would change that up to the annual Hallasand offering being a hyper-local event that Lily would obviously be trained and knowledgeable about (having lived in the town for at least a good chunk of her life). Although Jack seems to be knowledgeable of a lot of customs and cultures abroad, that doesn't mean he is going to know about, let alone be experienced in participating in, an event that happens in one specific town every year.

I didn't put too much hope into this show. The world already has stage IV browngirlslop fatigue so it was an uphill battle. It also feels kind of borrowed from TGAMM, I say borrowed not outright copied or stolen since they changed enough of the homework to mask it, but the parents definitely feel like Sharon + Pete 2.0 and then they have the same cantankerous exotic grandma as well. Lily is like an anti-Molly, and Jack is leagues better than that fat failure Darryl, and the Not!Flip guy seems to be Lily's Scratch. And of course the family dynamic as a whole is different. So again they changed just enough of the homework that it isn't TOO similar (like how much of a shameless ripoff of TLH/Casagrandes that Primos turned out to be), but I know I'm not watching anything groundbreaking either.

I feel like A New Wish got talked about a lot more last summer and still has had no word of a true second season, so things have just kind of grinded to a halt at Nickelodeon because of the Paramount deal.

The current era of cartoons reminds me of two periods in Fox Sunday Night history where it was obvious these great new shows coming out that had ZERO chance. the Napoleon Dynamite the Series era, and the Bordertown era.. I was kinda hoping Stugo and Wylde would last at least as long as like, Grimsburg and Krapopolis, but I wouldn't even be a little surprised if those died soon too. Moving back to thursday night after 30 years is not a great sign.

At last, my review.

I watched the new episode last week.

"The Meatball of Canyon Valley" was quite emotional.

Every year, Lily and her grandmother compete in a Korean trot dance contest, but lose every time, to their frustration. Jack tries it and turns out to be good at it. When Halmoni makes him her partner in the contest, Lily becomes warped with envy.

It starts simple enough with Lily and Jack competing against each other as the big day nears. Things get serious when Jack seems to get along with Halmoni better than Lily. Then others notice how Jack speaks Korean better than Lily and her costume fits better on Jack than her. This actually provokes a real sense of insecurity on her part that leads to a very emotional climax that succinctly underscores the value of belonging.

Halmoni noticeably inverts the usual depictions of the immigrant story by reminding Lily that Jack is basically a newcomer to America—like Halmoni herself probably was once. And since Alice is abroad, he needs guidance to make Canyon Valley his own home. Nikki Castillo and Jean Yoon's emotional deliveries and the short, impactful shots of Jack talking to Alice through the phone really shows how he needs help—and how this doesn't mean there's any threat to their relationship or that she's less than anything.

"Sticky Fingers" was another great episode.

Min asks Jack to bring her damaged necklace to the jewelers'. While she has an existential crisis after he calls her "mom", Charlie the gibbon steals it, forcing the siblings to search the Canyon Valley mines.

Like the previous segment, it starts simple enough, with a breezy beginning involving Charlie the gibbon, before reaching an emotional climax. It's parallel to "The Meatball of Canyon Valley" in that it focuses on Jack's relationship to Lily and her family. Where Lily thought Jack was getting more attention from Halmoni than her, it turns out Jack is afraid that he might not get as close a relationship with Min as Lily does. Concern is paralleled with Min worrying about Jack not accepting her as his stepmom.

As the siblings head deeper into the labyrinth, we get a very similar emotional climax, allowing Benjamin Plessala to really show Jack's vulnerable side. I do say it's like poetry, in that it underlines how he is concerned about fitting in with the family. It really shows how much the crew understands the concern of belonging, especially when it comes to moving to someplace unfamiliar, and how empathy and bonding makes the transition easier.

Overall, I think this was the best episode yet. I give it a 10/10.
