It tends to be one of the more slept on Aardman works. It underperformed at the box office. People didn’t like that it wasn’t claymation, or maybe they just thought a movie that mostly takes place in the sewer would have nothing but gross-out jokes.

Its certainly underexposed in the Dreamworks catalogue. You got more people making threads on fucking SharkTale then you do this film

I worked at a Blockbuster Video when this came out and our promo loop video actually had footage from the original version of the film were Rodney was an asshole. I believe there's a video game tie-in that probably couldn't be changed in time, as well.

I guess he was insufferable protaginist like that, but changing him to be likable right away is a bit odd in a couple places, like him trying to trick the fat rat into getting flushed down the toilet (he has no idea there's a rat city down there) and when he smashes the gem Rita wanted so much to prove it's fake.

Despite it being a more questionable animated film, it is one of Aardmans best full fledged animated movie. If it weren't for chicken run it would be THE best in their catalogue but I would argue it is only because of chicken run being full stop motion and more mature in overall theme.

I actually liked Chicken Run 2, was a fun friendship movie and seeing Ginger and Ms Tweedy again had its moments.

It wasn't too bad honestly. I really liked the set designs and thought it was a good logical end point to the plot formula (instead of a cruel POW style camp it is an idealic one; instead of breaking out they are breaking in to the camp ect ect). I just felt some of the characters were a bit...I don't know...kinda thin? Ginger's daughter was inoffensive enough but a part of me feels like if she had more bite or was a lot more bratty she would be a more interesting character. I don't know.

The brainwashing cult was grim as was the walking to The Wall style meat grinder. Suppose I do agree too that Ginger's daughter was not engaging enough her name didn't even stick in memory for me. I feel like they kind of didn't know what they wanted if she was a rebellious brat or a lone ranger. I think it might have been interesting if she had taken after Rocky's negative traits a bit more for an edge. So at least that way her and the friend could have at least had the dynamic of parenting styles. I think that was the issue with the movie being so short was we barely had the Ginger Rocky as parents to the sole important hatchling of the sanctuary and then it's off to break in and the Tweedy romance plot. Felt was too heavy trying to juggle it all compared to the first which was a lot more straightforward.

Wow I can't even decipher a good chunk of that. Rita showing up in CR would have been funny

I think the films length was a big factor. They needed to establish the island, the farm, the previous characters in the present as well as new ones and both breaking the in then out heists in only 1 hour and 30 minutes. The fact they were able to pull it off somewhat to begin with is commendable, but as you say something like an extra 30 minutes or more would have gone a really long way in terms of pacing and character development. I think they were focused on streaming which is why the film was so short relatively, but at the same time if they were going for the streaming audience having an episodic plot structure would make more sense (and be more forgiving).

I remember this movie being mid as a kid but this scene was fun. I remember having a bunch of the flushed away happy meal toys and shooting them all with my BB gun because they were all lame.
