Is Superman an isolated incident, or so overseas markets no longer care about superheroes at all?
I suppose we'll know in a couple weeks when Fantastic Four comes out. I could see superheroes becoming just an American thing.

The movie looked awful it's not our fault we don't want to watch movies that look like a credit card commercial

It's why the Snyder Era of DC actually made money

Heroes are supposed to mythic and something to aspire to

Why would I want to aspire to be a ugly Jewish zoomer?

The view from bongland: I think general audiences here are just done with capes. My screening was like 3/4 empty on the second day of release, a Saturday as well, when you’d expect families and wagies to show up. There’s also the fact everybody is fucking skint right now, but that shouldn’t even have affected my cinema because it’s a Vue where you can get tickets for £4.99. Not even the value seats were filled.

I think it speaks to how hard it is for solo CBM projects to light up the sky these days.

And by solo I mean as solo as you can conceivably get these days. Deadpool & Wolverine is a team-up movie, Spidey only got to a billion finally due to a contractual clause that requires another major established character in his movies and the multiverse latches like a leach to almost everything.

Despite all the buzz about "people aren't sick of superhero movies, they're just sick of bad superhero movies", in actuality what they really want are hype moments and aura, whether that enriches or gets in the way of actual storytelling (typically the latter).

Ironically Clayface of all things is probably the only project in the current DC film slate that might knock it out of the park at the box office, since it will only cost $40 million and is marketing itself as a stand-alone horror movie.

Gunn's style is just very American for foreign markets. Referencing music only Gen X Americans really care about, really overwrought appeals to emotion, everyone is always snarky or sarcastic instead of acting like sincere human beings.
It just must seem bizarre. The kind of American films that resonate with foreign audiences are pretty cut and dried and don't try to put too much of the director's own tastes into it. Guardians is an exception because the whole identity of those films revolves around the lead character beign some Gen Xer who got sent to outer space and how it shapes his world view, butno one expects a similar tone from a regular superhero movie.

It's more than that, Superman's whole thing is that he's the quintessential american superhero who embodied american values. "Truth, justice, and the american way" was basically his motto for a long time in the comics.

To most other countries, that's makes him boring at best and sus at worst because being quintessentially american is construed as a negative quality nowadays.

I hate how people keep saying this when the Snyder heroes DIDN'T REALLY STAND FOR ANYTHING beyond a generic 'do good'.

Superman looked depressed and morose 90% of the time and looked inconvenienced while he was saving people. He never specifically said what his ideology was.

Batman's ideology if anything was, "Let criminals get murdered for all I care."

Wonder Woman fucked off for an entire century because her boyfriend died.

The only exception is Aquaman, who was pretty adamant on protecting the ocean and seeking good relations between Atlantis and the surface world.

It's probably going to do $650m+ which will probably be a modest profit overall. The days of Superhero films comfortably getting $800m+ are done, shit has to really make people want to open their wallets now.

Hollywood needs to get their budgets under control, Need to keep things way south of $200m.

>Latin America
OP's image is old, already.
Latin America repped 50 of the foreign gross and Superman was the top movie in those markets, it was considered 'soft' in Asia. JWR will beat it in China but no one, either at WB/DISCO or even other studios, expected otherwise. Japan will probably be a disappointment if those numbers don't improve.

Yes, global politics will also hurt First Step, especially since it has other problems. Idiots here might be happy that the main cast are all very white, but that won't play in say China. Idiots here may complain that Pascal is Mexican, but that won't help FF in Latin America. Marvel remains popular in LA but Latin America only contributed about $24-25M to Thunderbolts worldwide BO, and most of the $10M+ was Mexico. Superman already made $8.8M in Mexico this weekend and will probably end up with more than $10M easily by mid-August when it stops playing in theaters, as just one example. And that was with a more diverse cast than First Steps.

people are being idiots, arm chair insiders when they aren't - it's like trusting randos on a YT channel or the comment section for fantasy football leagues

studios prefer it be 50/50. the movies that make a billion tend to make more overseas but it's never two to one unless we're talking major over a billion

lilo is almost a billy but that's $400+ local, $500+ foreign - minecraft is almost the same, just under but it's not really in theaters so lilo will go over a billy and minecraft won't

last year, inside out 2 made almost 1.7B, and almost a billy was foreign, despicable me 2 only got slightly past $950M and it was also 1/2 getting not quite twice as much foreign as dom
but the other two movies that a billy/billy+ (moana and deadpool/wolvie) were both 50/50

so it's stupid people talking out of their asses
superman should easily clear $550-600M and about another $180-220M will be foreign - we will know next Saturday how well it might actually end up

People will watch good movies, and despite all the fake hype Superman 2025 is not a good movie. It's made clear from the trailers and the mixes reviews.

Not as bad as the people who were totally convinced that they could rely on China box office in the 2010s even though even back then it was known that studios only got 25% of the money from China's box office

Americans obviously. The movie is doing well domestically, it's overseas where it's struggling

?
There weren't any Gen X people at the World Inferno shows I used to go to. What are you on about?
Also, Gunn is not a music supervisor. He's not the one who picks the songs.

DC brand is in the mud after the snyder years. Gonna take a few hits in a row to build it up. Even Superman who hasn't had a good movie in like 50 years. Should be more compared to the phase 1 marvel movies

Everyone in that pic looks like a crossplayer painted onto velvet by an Elvis impersonator.
Cinematography is the only thing Snyder is actually good at and you picked a pic that makes him look like he takes boudoir shots in a Reno strip mall.
