Hot take. These over 600 page hardcovers are an awful reading experience.

I honestly don't like getting and reading through them because I just get concerned I'd break it

Yeah, omnibuses and the like are just collector's items but are really impractical for actual reading.

Does it have a properly bound spine or is it just glued? If itโ€™s properly bound you should ease it before reading by opening it in the middle and flipping the pages in each side first. If itโ€™s just glued in then yeah, itโ€™s shit.

I'd like if they more often did the manga way of having a hardcover case that has 3-4 smaller books inside.

Either way it's just not comfortable reading a brick. It's just something cool to look at on your shelf, it's not a good way to actually read comics.

I agree, especially because I like to read in bed before going to sleep and the softer surface makes it even hard to keep the book flat.

For my contribution these Dark Horse Alien/Predator/AvP ominibi also suck because they're smaller in terms of width and height than a regular comic book, so all the art is shrunk down and you can't enjoy the details as much.

I never have trouble reading them. I read in bed, either with on my side with it next to me, or half sitting with me knees up and it in my lap. I actually prefer it to a TPB or smaller hardcover that will flap shut as soon as you stop giving it attention.

I am going to be real with you (OP), even If end up buying something, I still read online.

The book is just to collect and (try) to get money to the author, but I prefer to read digital 100% of the time. Cells are big enough nowadays that any complain about size is silly, not to mention pads or notebooks, and you can very easily zoom in details or google words or context if needed.

I hate omnis so much. Will take a thick trade paperback any day. Even compendiums are better

Not OP but. While I absolutely agree that tablets are great for reading, especially if you're away on vacation or something, but for anons like me who use reading time to settle down for sleep of an evening, it's antithetical.

I understand because I still have paperbacks that I read and enjoy, and specially love to settle with a book if I have enough time, but for me it's quite the opposite in a way; the more it keeps me awake the better.

I work 60 hours a week and have some severe sleep issues, so the screen helping me not to fall asleep to enjoy reading a bit more is a must.

It's really just the beginning that's hard. By the time you get to the middle it's fine and when you reach the end it's hard again but you have the motivation of having just read everything that came before to keep you going.

Do you have a tablet recommendation? My fiance has an iPad and it seems nice but the one time I tried to use it I found it very annoying and uncomfortable.

Agreed. I was trying to read the lobo big fraggin compendium and it was so annoying. Tablets are superior for me, Iโ€™m engaged more because the light makes it pop to me, itโ€™s more comfortable just scrolling down or to the side so itโ€™s not constant page flipping and I just 100% prefer it.

The one thing I prefer for physical is the smell of a new book as retarded as it sounds.

Mostly I use my cellphone, honestly. It's already wide as my palm, barely fits on my pocket, but the perfect size to read comics or lightnovels.

A person can get used to anything. I am probably doing it the most basic way possible, but I like it that way.

Huh, didn't realize they did that. Only ones I've ever seen are like the comics in this thread. Any in particular that come to mind?

My uncle is still into comics (mostly reads older stuff he grew up with) and he even says he wish he had digital growing up.

I agree with you and OP but I also do prefer to read physical trades, I just don't buy them, I borrow from my library. I just read the three Superman vs. Meshi (more out of curiosity than anything else, and also because other things I wanted were checked out and I could order read all three of these quickly). I picked up an anthology when I returned them and I'm going to go through the catalog and find some new stuff to order/pick up when I am done with this anthology. It's a hard cover, but it's still only about 150-180 pages all told.

It won't be comfortable to read more than a few floppies worth at night but that was a reason to get an anthology. I normally try to get TPBs unless there's content I want in an HC.

I like fancy oversized hardcover editions because usually it has a comprehensive collection of the issues in reading order and the sewn binding minimizes gutter loss compared to trade paperbacks (in general). Being big, taking up space in your house, and availability is a con though (particularly marvel who seem to do bs small print runs for shit that is way too popular like daredevil).
