On a single strip a day schedule it's decompressed to hell, sure, but if you're actually paying attention or binge reading it becomes very noticeable. Willis also uses the semester start dates of the real world IU-Bloomington so it's not that hard to track. It is January 29th in-universe as of the most recent strip.

The problem is that Willis is just going along with public zeitgeist (minus a few months because this arc was written last November) so Willis was positive about Carla's parents and status back in 2016 when tech billionaires were being glazed as the new innovators of society but now that the economy is shit and everyone's pissed off it is suddenly a bad thing. And I'd put money down that the moment the economy picks up and people stop caring so much his sentiment will flip. A very cynical read of Willis is that his decompression is serves to allow him to pivot plot beats along long-term reactions and pretend it was his plan all along. Because when your storyline is controversial but not expected to wrap up until three years from now it's pretty easy to completely alter the dynamics and pretend it was what you intended all along. To be honest, I think this current story with Dorothy and Joyce is him taking it a step too far and he's probably going to burn off a chunk of his fanbase because he spent years getting people invested in Joe and Joyce. Suddenly (relative to Willis' pacing), throwing something as massive as Joyce and Dorothy having mutually reciprocated feelings for each other is going to be interpreted as a massive slap to the face, and even if it is just a temporary thing for drama it not only could take years just to resolve this single plot development but it completely alters how the audience reacts to Joyce versus Joe.

They're all awful people. But they're treated as human beings worth a redemption because of their flaws, while Mary is treated as irredeemably evil.
Mary's bigotry is not much worse than the other characters toxicity. But the biggest difference is that Mary represents Willis' old ideals, so she will never be more than his favourite punching bag.

Maybe it's just because DOA is stuck in the 2000s in my mind, but I do legitimately think Mary would like that era of edgy seinen stuff. Hellsing, Death Note, Berserk, all that. It fits her whole "I demand you take me seriously" schtick, and given how she dresses I imagine she'd think it's super cool. Plus the basic moral often boils down to "The world is corrupt and evil, fight back by being worse", which is very Mary.

Given that I grew up in rural Alabama, Mary is pretty consistent with the majority of evangelical teens in my high school. They're the ones who were pissed their parents wouldn't let them get into Pokemon and that they had to sneak around to read Harry Potter. The hardcore "everything is Satan" types were few and far between.
