Commercials.
Also, being free does not disqualify something from being bad.

They aren’t owed my viewership if they continuously make bad content.

and you don't do this out of the goodness of your heart. you do this to monetize our data, or to use the sheer number of viewers to charge companies large fees for commercials and gain your profit.

you owe us quality shows to watch, we still exist as a consumer base without you, you don't exist as a producer of content or even as entity without us.

Their entire business model is based on making the audience happy and giving them what they want. You fail to do that and you'll lose them. No audience = no sponsors = no ad revenue = cancelled.

Viewers owe entertainers nothing. Now dance monkey, dance!

Entertainment and expression is a dialogue. Artists have killed themselves for want of an audience. Compensation for labor with currency is customary in a capitalist society, but the freedom and ability to exhibit one's creativity publicly is effectively a privilege that many don't get to partake in.
Further, time and attention are limited. Entertainment often serves as a surrogate for meaningful relationships and hobbies. Creators should feel fortunate that they've managed to make something that resonates enough with others that they would spend their precious time consuming it.

I remember thinking this was a dumb argument when I saw it on TV when the episode aired. It's not free. We're paying for it.

And that the people that make the show are in fact being paid to do it.

The Simpsons has always been on network television. You may have needed to upgrade to a digital antenna and HDTV but your local FOX affiliate should be broadcasting for free

Entertainment is free, and subjective. I don't care about your products. I don't care that you're going bankrupt because you can't handle standard growth and NEED to squeeze every last dollar. I don't care that the worthless ingrate cattle you call your "employees" starve because they worked on slop.

FOX was free when this episode aired. I don't know about other countries and I don't know if it's still free. But as long as you had a TV and I think a built-in antennae (Been a very long time since I used a CRT), you were able to get FOX.

This.
Creatives and performers LOVE to respond to criticism by explaining how they already got payed.

Simpsons writers got real salty about criticism. Not surprising the show went to shit if they couldn't handle being told they were fucking up. Maybe it was hubris from creating a massive success.

>If anything, you owe them.
God never told them to contribute the best years of their lives to an irreverent adult cartoon that mocks and parodies entertainment in society over anything else. That sting you feel from living a life unfulfilled is because you never hit your calling. Of course people won't be appreciative of your efforts. You threw them into the wrong field. Offering a popular character like Bart as a plea for your mouthpiece just shows the level of desperation the writers are feeling.
>Let's have this message delivered through the boy. People like the boy.
And it was swallowed up by laughter. So they've stopped letting Bart be the mouthpiece since anything associated with him ends in yucks and more seasons (which is the "you owe them" part since without viewership there would be no Simpsons) so now the writers have shifted gears to have Lisa be their mouthpiece.

Now no one listens because Lisa is anti-comedy and sucks big fat hairy.
