>>149403230NTA, but I go to the gym. I tend to sign up for whichever one is cheap and close enough that I'll actually go to it (I also don't have a car so I'll be biking or walking if the weather is shitty). It's harder if you need stuff like a pool or racketball courts, but most gyms will at least have the basics which is good enough for what I do - various cardio machines, freeweights, and some weight machines. If you go to one of those boxing gyms, they may have more freeweights and fewer machines (if any).
Going to the gym can be daunting at first, but it's not bad. Just observe other people to figure out the etiquette.
Generally:
- wipe down machines/benches before and after use (before for you, after as a courtesy to others)
- put your shit away when you're done using it
- don't hoard weights if you don't need all of them at once
- limit breaks between sets. People often dick around on their phone, but what they think is like 1 minute can easily be 15 which sucks if you're waiting for them to be done. Set a timer, especially if people are waiting. If you need longer breaks between sets, offering to let people rotate sets with you is polite.
I'd research the gym's cancellation policy too. Most of them do whatever they can to discourage you from leaving and it can be a real pain in the ass if you end up moving or decide the place isn't the right fit for you.
