The story is thus far a fairly compressed "Wakanda isn't your pan-african black american hotep fantasy it's a supposed to be an example for how you need to turn inward and fix your house just as much as you need to protect your community, which means dealing with and changing detrimental aspects and removing bad actors" rundown which was like 50% of Priest's contribution to codifying what Black Panther was. He's a king not because it makes him cool black royal batman but because that means he has responsibilities and obligations and Wakanda's societal problems are *his* personal problems that can fuck up his day because he's the guy who has the duty of enforcing laws and can only do so much to change it himself without tyranny, meaning he has to struggle to convince them to change things themselves.

Later writers just use him to jerk off about muh Black Power, see here for him doing it in a single page essentially.

He's always been clearly upset by this, but he's way older and too dignified and respectful to just outright call them faggots for it. If you look at whenever he talks about later writers, he never mentions anything specific to praise, just that their work was popular and that's super fucking telling considering this is the guy who could give you an itemized list of other writer's accomplishments on other characters he worked on and would gush about his favorite aspects with minimal prompting.
