Why are American animated movies afraid to go beyond this rating?

Because there's more money to be made in G and PG rated movies. We've been over this many times. Families are big money and nobody is taking their kids to some PG-13 or R rated animated movies.

It's not even close anon. Anime movies make a good amount of money but they don't make nearly as much as the ones from Hollywood. Ne Zha 2 is the anomaly but all its money is from China and there's no rating for it.

Also it's the proven formula for maximum box office payout. People will take their wife and kids for a night out at the movies to see an animated flick. Anything else like Arcane they will wait and catch streaming.

This. The highest grossing Wapanese animu, which is far ahead of the box office of other Wapanese cartoons, isn't even in the top 50.

Advertising restrictions. Small Soldiers was a movie that became PG-13 at the last minute and lost out on advertising deals.

ne zha 2 had people in china actively forcing employees to take a day off of work to go watch that movie on the company dime
rich people would buy out multiple theaters and give the tickets away to random rural kids who likely never went to go see it
even the military supposedly had theaters bought out to show a ton of people the movie at once

I never watched it but even if it was that good the entire country went out of their way to watch it because it was an easy way to show support for the ccp since you didn't have to buy expensive chinese tech that broke down on you within a week and was not covered by the warranty for some bs reason

Adult animated films becoming mainstream in cinemas wouldn't be a particularly good scenario. Imagine 6 or so new Sausage Party equivalents every few months.

Does that even matter? They don't make anything other than goofy 3D comedy when it comes to Animated movies so there's no point to go byond that rating, obviously
