So if Taika is on the project, it's definitely going to be more comedic than the Karl Urban one, but there's a valid worry that rather than being more dry and satirical like the comics, it will just be kind of irreverent and goofy. I wish I could think of a director who's a good fit to take that approach but actual satire seems to be kind of dead in mainstream filmmaking. Taika's probably the closest the studio heads could come up with.

Anyone complaining hasn't read Judge Dredd. Waititi is a pretty good fit. The Judge Dredd comics are a British satire on American culture. They are more campy and comedic than dark and serious. Both the 2012 and Stallone films misunderstood them in different ways. The 2012 one took itself way too seriously and the Stallone one treated the satire as sincere and unironic.

I have read thousands more pages of Dredd than you clowns. Taiki will kill it.

I'm not sure his humour is too in-jokey if that makes sense, all the characters in his films know they are in a farce and don't care, whereas a good Dredd comedic story has Dredd as a perfect straight man to everything.

I agree. His movies usually winks at the camera a lot, which can be fine if you're doing a straight comedy, or a mocumentary like What We Do in the Shadows.
But the characters in Judge Dredd should take everything very seriously, while it should be obvious to the audience that the scenarios are ridiculous.
Taika mostly makes character comedy, and less scenario comedy.
