It was a bit better. Mods had a better vetting process to become one and most didn't abuse their authority to troll like many do now. They also had a sense of humour back then. They'd occasional "user was banned for this post" when someone said something stupid but the weren't actually banned. Trolls were the minority and politics was at a real minimum. It wasn't overrun with teenagers like it is now.

I understand what you are TRYING to say, but you are still wrong. m00t was a teenager, and so was at least a 3rd of the early posters who were in fucking high school. And politics were spammed everywhere way less, because, again, a lot of teenagers and freshmen /co/llege students, who did not have a job, largely lived with their parents, and did not have to worry about those things.

Politics (or as I prefer, LOLitics) aside, 4chan was always full of dumb teenagers. It's just that old teenagers were way better, not made insane by Tiktok, and with actual attention span.

/co/ was originally much more of a comics board than an animation board. What little animation was discussed here was largely Avatar (this was actually by far the biggest), the old Spielberg cartoons, the DCAU, and Adult Swim shows. DCAU threads also had a lot of crossover with the comics threads for a lot of reasons. As a result, webcomics were also MUCH more discussed here, and major events in them could sometimes spill out into multiple threads. In terms of what was actually airing at the time, outside of Avatar I remember /co/ really liking Flapjack.

tl;dr I kinda bailed on /co/ after Hilda's 2nd season but was basically dormant for a long time before that and have no reason to participate anymore. I am highly active in another subculture but I'm not sharing which one. 4chan as a whole has nothing to offer anymore. In all other aspects I'm doing great, I live a boring adult life of a boring guy who is almost 40 and as you can gauge from that the Internet as a whole is now mostly uninteresting to me. While I miss the good old days I didn't fall into the nostalgia trap, I consider Internet as a whole and everything it was and offered to be functionally over. I come here every few days, scroll past most of everything and save a pic here and there. That's about it.

To be fair there still are smaller places, forums and such where the Internet is alive and kicking but the noise has overwhelmed the signal in the whole wider ecosystem and I doubt this can be easily fixed or is even possible. Corporations, governments, Indians, smartphones and a plethora of other things just broke it and shat into it all. 4chan itself is basically dead, /co/ is "alive" to a degree only because paradoxically Western animation died and inglorious death. It was all over once Twelve Forever got cancelled due to... reasons, since that was the first Western cartoon that had a certain depth to it that was on par with certain anime.
