This storyline is the most shameless thing a superhero comic has ever done

Hey guys!
Heh
Hey guys!
What if we made a Superman story, where people distrust him????
It's super original!
Literally makes a movie about it.

The marketing around it is, the story itself is a fairly meat and potatoes DC story from the era. I can't imagine calling anything Dan jurgens was involved in as edgy or extreme, he's such a milquetoast creator. It make the whole situation kind of bizarre, the story doesn't pretend it's a permanent death because the resurrection is set up a few issues/weeks after the funeral. If not for the marketing it'd be another storyline from the time.

The entire superhero genre is a collection of "what-ifs" with no canon being the true canon.
So nobody cares. When a character in a shonen manga dies that is IT, they're GONE, because there's only one continuity.

God imagine how much better things would be if this was true. It'd be such a different industry, hell it might even still be an industry.

You have neither read this comic, nor many others. This is pretty tame. Any random issue with a variant cover or fill-in artist is more shameless.

Also fuck that gay ass Max Landis video. Nothing he says in it makes sense. They were killing off and reviving majorly important characters decades before this.

I think it's pretty well done. I don't exactly like Doomsday as a character but the comic itself sold him pretty well. That moment where everyone's firing on him for like five minutes straight, exhaust their energy and then he just emerges unscathed was pretty kino

Anon, 1993 was the year everything changed.
the archive has post about all that happened from the first issue when doomsday showed up til dec 31 1993
is literally insane how most of the most stuff we know and all of the most darkest turns happened during the period superman died and we had reign and bloodlines to finish up.

>>149444395
Everything we know these days and praise happened that year, it was a game changer, the cell saga tournament darkest moments, dredd's most edge period, Booster Gold losing his arm, the most edgelord and darkest sailor moon movie, even the legacy virus debuted in 1993.

Nah, this is just silly. You're just picking two edgy things from likely the only two manga/anime you know. The manga industry and the American comics industry move completely differently, there wasn't an early-90s "grimdark" era in manga like there was in the US. There's just always been dark things in manga/anime in ways that couldn't exist in the mainstream US industry.

Death of Superman is an event/storyline that starts out bad but gets good. The actual Death event is retarded and boring, but the subsequent Reign of the Supermen storyline is great. It's kind of the opposite of Knightfall, which starts real good and ends real dumb.

They really weren't. The biggest death/rebirth before this was Jean Gray. Maybe you could argue Captain America in the Silver Age revival. It actually wasn't common to revive dead characters back then. If you disagree, feel free to provide examples.

Death - just ok, some moments of pathos but mostly rushed sloppy and unimaginative

Funeral for a Friend - absolute comic kinography, moving, reverent, just lovely

Reign/Return - a lotta fun, some great art, solid plotting, good times

It was, in hindsight, pretty heady to be 9 or ten years old at the time, in that there was that sort of breakthrough mass media buzz about this stuff, like Superman on the teevee news, not for a movie but for comics, your teacher starting class by asking how you felt about Superman dying, almost as if we were actually in Metropolis. Stuff like that. Batman and Spidey and others too. Now we're all acclimated to everything being a ruse and a fakeout, and I'm sure gen x was more astute. But it felt like this is how life would be, that what's happening in comic books is a big part of culture.

It was genuinely puzzling as a lad. I mean, you went with it, it's fine. But sexy supergirl turning into a purple blob monster in the sexual servitude of this hirtstute redheaded guy, and yeah, some ragtag group of c listers, with Bats, Wondy etc nowhere in sight..
Even to some extent, his powers, I get that that nerfed him post crisis now and that he was tired, but Superman having the fight of his life, and death, in a Walmart electronics section? A gas station?

Everything about the way they did the actual death was bizarre. First, they chose to have a new enemy, Doomsday, appear out of nowhere and do the deed, not the obvious choice of Lex or some other old enemy that would make sense and have a bigger impact because of the history. Second, it's just so abrupt. Doomsday appears, they fight, and Supes is dead inside a month. Almost no foreshadowing or buildup in the comics beforehand.
