Kyle Rayner being Mexican is a retarded retcon
Anonymous No.149448401

He's only half Mexican, and he's too white passing to be a viable token.
The real stupid shit is when King acts like he can speak Spanish.

I don't know that I'd call it stupid but it was really weird how he was very suddenly VERY Mexican.

It's a big part of the problem with constant rotating writers. Half of them do no research, they see on a wiki page that someone is half Mexican and that writer gets to work writing a character that was raised in Tijuana and came here two weeks ago.

Same shit happened to Jessica.

Next time he appears on screen in movie or cartoon format, he will probably speak with a thick accent too.

That was because King didn't know enough about his character and ran with him being very mexican catholic when he should be more Irish Catholic. Kyle's dad wasn't part of his life and he didn't even know he was half Mexican until he was an adult. It shouldn't really factor into his character at all.

look. anon.
when that happens, it means "they got on our case for too many whiteys, so we had to say he's something else"
this is the only way to keep characters around, okay?

it's almost like ethnic background shouldn't be part of a character profile, but instead nationality, where they were raised.

Nah in Kyle's case it really wasn't important to the story Winnick was trying to tell. It was just an element and a reason why Kyle had struggled so much to find his dad. It wasn't until King had him start praying in Spanish during Omega Men that it really got assigned to his character, and that was entirely King not knowing enough about the character. I think a few writers have had him speak random Spanish but it only really gets brought up for these Hispanic History Month covers.

I've never seen it matter much to the character. The only memorable time it was shown he had some Mexican in him was BUENO BUENO BUENO.

Yup, he's Mexican alright.

Im ok with more light skinned/mixed ethnicity Hispanic representation. As long as they’re suitably unable to speak Spanish like many second and third generations

So you're saying before the PC age, someone wrote a story where Kyle wanted to find his father, and his estranged father was Mexican
that's... what is it the young people say.. 'based'?

Kyle Rayner was created in the 90s. Kyle Rayner never existed before a PC age

That was the age where the term politically correct was at its height. Judd Winnick was liberal even for a liberal back then.

>It's a big part of the problem with constant rotating writers.
On the one hand, since I know writers in Hollywood, including having met some comic book writers, don't get paid enough to do research and are expected to do it even when they aren't getting paid for it.

That said, I'd also say it's stupid that they DON'T do research or take jobs when it's about SHIT they don't know - whether it be comic books, tornado twisters or even some made up shit like science fiction or fantasy.

>part of the problem
THAT ALL SAID:
A bigger part of the problem with both Marble and DC is that the editors aren't fucking doing THEIR jobs, which would include reminding someone like King (or anyone else writting Kyle) of their fucking canon history.

They aren't doing that. And that's also a major part of the problem since THAT is what they are being paid for.
