The guy from Superman Returns already nailed that role. I'd prefer if Cavill wore the Superman Beyond suit, would sort of mesh well as a representation of the darker DCEU vibe and could harken back to the Starro in James Gunn's Suicide Squad, either referencing it happened in past tense or hinting that it might occur soon.

At 5:40 Snyder talks about being approached to make a Superman movie. At 6:25, he brags about how he'd tear down Supes. You can't really blame Cavil when the director was set on breaking Superman.

At around 0:25, Cavil gets asked about making a new Superman movie. He goes on to describe his ideal version of Supes being "joyful, hopeful, powerful" and wants to portray Superman's full power in the role of a protector unlike what we see in MoS. You can't really fault Cavil when everyone else around him was pushing for a darker DC and a darker Superman. Either way, it's too late to bring back Cavil as Earth-1 Supes. Either make him Earth-2 Supes or Kingdom Come Supes as Routh did for the Arrowverse.
