That was the end of western animation. Anime has better art styles for starters. Anime can deliver on the violence like Outlaw Star or Cowboy Bebop. Western cartoons at the time were still stuck with censored trite like Samurai Jack which could only kill robots and it had a wonky unfitting art style for drama.

This ended up making a lot of networks invest into comedies like Regular Show instead but that was the end very much. There is no returning enjoy the reboot of Phineas and Ferb because once that runs its course its truly game over for good. You're not going to get the interest of young people with ugly ass series like Stugo or as I like to call it STUPID. Why would you name your damn series Stugo, it does indeed read like the word stupid. And other newer series like Wylde Pak are just knock offs of things like Loud House and Casagrandes.

What killed western animation for me was thinking it through and realizing that the DCAU is horrible trash. Hey you like Batman right? He grows old into a shut in LOSER who allows a little child, Robin, to get tortured because he can't bring himself to kill a psycho. And if you like Superman the entire Superman series has a central story about how humanity hates Superman because he gets mind controlled and how is this resolved? Superman's main villain Luthor rescues the Earth from Darkseid meaning Superman is useless.

I honestly find the DCAU unwatchable nowadays because the major heroes, Superman and Batman end up depicted as failures at life. And the lesser heroes get portrayed even worse. And don't get me started on how the DCAU invented that horrible character Harley Quinn. That shitty character has poisoned DC entirely.

Seriously though, we need more people working with a John K level of obsessive passion and knowledge about cartoons. Just ones that can meet deadlines and not groom teenage girls. People like that exist, and sometimes they'll get work on shows, but the current industry isn't helping them thrive. The whole landscape is a mess though, television is basically dead.

It's actually fucked up how easily Nobuhiro Watsuki, the Rurouni Kenshin guy, got off. He was caught with 100 DVDs of child porn and didn't even get jail time. He only paid a 200,000 yen ($1,900 at the time) fine. And Rurouni Kenshin went back into publication not too long after.
