They should've made this the titular sea beast instead of that red Toothless knock-off we got.

This. Same reason why The Sea Beast went the predictable route and devolved into yet another "the creatures are just misunderstood" story after peaking with that opening fight sequence

>The humans re-wrote history so the giant monsters are the bad guys!

Is the most ham-fisted shit I've ever seen lol. It's like if I wrote a story about how the feral hogs being gunned down because some human wanted a military contract or some bullshit, and not cause they're actually destructive.

Are they still making a sequel or was that just another empty promise from Netflix?

I've noticed some people really get upset about the idea of sympathetic monsters for some reason? I don't get it as someone who likes monsters wether good or evil to be honest.

Because it is easily the most out of nowhere explanation for why the monsters are misunderstood. Not only that the characters do not earn the revelation the monsters are actually good. I'm going to use HTTYD as an example as it's so obvious this film is heavily "inspired" by it. In that film the Dragons and Vikings have understandable animosity for each other, toothless and hiccup both work to come to terms with eachother as friends and it's a relationship that is built up over the course of the film. The revelation that the dragons are attacking to sustain an alpha is well within the realm of believability. Ultimately the vikings and dragons coming together makes sense as they end up benefitting eachother at the end. The Sea Beast on the otherhand starts by establishing these monsters attack ships indiscriminately with no reason. Then our titular sea beast simply shows compassion and care for our main characters for absolutely no reason. The characters do not earn their bond with one another. The ultimate reveal that the Sea Monsters are defending the encroachment of their territory comes completely out of left field and is a huge stretch that a little girl assumes that stories written about men defending themselves from monsters is fucking propaganda. The Sea Beast is lazy, that's why people hate it. It doesn't earn any of it's narrative twists. Ironically the sea beast would have done well to just play it strait and be about the humans stopping the main beast from destroying their ships.

I think they really needed to do a better job establishing why Red Bluster is more tolerant of the leads or even show monsters that clearly aren't aggressive getting hunted if they wanted to make the point of the sea monsters being sympathetic. They try a nuanced thing with the one crab attacking and Red Bluster going apeshit against the one giant ship which drives a wedge but as you said it isn't built up to much which I think is caused by how long it takes for Red to be part of the cast compared to Toothless who is built up, shown in a moment of vulnerability and yet still realistically isn't an immediately submissive animal. Another film I think does the nuance of monsters much better is Ultraman Rising which was also a Netflix original though admittedly that has the advantage of being in a franchise which has explored sympathetic Kaiju, heroic Kaiju, Kaiju played for horror and Kaiju played for comedy many times over the years.
