>>149470853I think they really needed to do a better job establishing why Red Bluster is more tolerant of the leads or even show monsters that clearly aren't aggressive getting hunted if they wanted to make the point of the sea monsters being sympathetic. They try a nuanced thing with the one crab attacking and Red Bluster going apeshit against the one giant ship which drives a wedge but as you said it isn't built up to much which I think is caused by how long it takes for Red to be part of the cast compared to Toothless who is built up, shown in a moment of vulnerability and yet still realistically isn't an immediately submissive animal. Another film I think does the nuance of monsters much better is Ultraman Rising which was also a Netflix original though admittedly that has the advantage of being in a franchise which has explored sympathetic Kaiju, heroic Kaiju, Kaiju played for horror and Kaiju played for comedy many times over the years.
