Good morning, grandpa. Good news: the paper is here early today. Bad news: the comics section is a little thin. I recommend reading slowly.

Different scene: It’s 2 because the raccoon’s eyes are different but it could also be 1 since they didn’t completely color in the ground, how embarrassing
Slylock: He changed the order of the answers for each student which, combined with the shrinking, makes it more likely the cheater will circle the wrong answer without realizing it
True or false: 1) true
2) true in the wild. In captivity, it’s usually around 10-15 years
3) false, they have shit eyeshit that only goes to about 10 feet which is why they keep getting hit by cars
I’m dogshit at 6 Differences so I only found three the moon is in different phases, the fish’s gills, the skunk is looking forward minding his own business on the top while in the bottom he’s staring at the camera because he’s coming for YOU next
Incidentally, have you ever been told "Actually, skunk don’t smell that bad except for when they spray"? That’s only half true apparently. Totally clean skunks don’t smell that bad (or at least no worst than any other wild animal) HOWEVER when they spray someone they naturally get a little on themselves and they can’t clean themselves well enough to get rid of it all on their own. You could do it for them but most skunks aren’t going to let you give them a good scrubbing unless they really trust you

I could never get into it, since I read the original for years, it was even fun to see how Mark grew the characters up, and the art style was charming. but it was too much of a switch for me it would be like if someone else came in and did Peanuts it was too radically different, even though I could tell Mark was getting tried at the end of the Heart, it was still alright.

I'm open-minded. I can find value in a lot of things that otherwise get written off as not worth engagement. I tend to give things far more chances than they deserve. Despite this, it is an absolute labor for me to click on Heart Of The City (modern) each week.
Just look at >>149471233 . It's a mess.
The pacing is shit. The 1st panel is filler that adds nothing that isn't immediately explained by the 2nd. Everything after that is an unnecessary bit of set-up for what's to come in the next few strips. 5 through 8 are wholly unrewarding in isolation. Modern Heart constantly does this. Steenz comes up with a mildly effective punchline and then keeps rambling until the space is filled.
Couple Modern Heart's phoned-in art with the low effort entries (the 'puzzles' and jokeless landscape strips), contrast it with the care Steenz shows in her personal non-syndicated works, and you have to conclude that the whole thing is just a gig to her. If she doesn't care about making it, how am I supposed to care about reading it?
In isolation, it would be inoffensively bad. Attached to something heartfelt (hah) like Classic Heart, it becomes insulting.
Anonymous No.149476761

I've grown pretty sympathetic-to-fond of random landscape strips in Newspaper comics. It's a long tradition in newspaper comics, and seems to fit the caricature and sketch origins of the field. Gasoline Alley's sketch comics are the highlight the current author's run. Zippy the Pinhead is basically landscape sketches mixed with absurdist ramblings (or increasingly, just nostalgia).
That said, Steenz is pretty bad at it. Though sometimes is okay. I'd have more grace for it if her regular comics were better.
