Who the fuck wants to waste even a minute of their time watching a Smurfs movie starring fucking James Corden? I'd rather be repeatedly kicked in the balls for 90 minutes.

Why am I supposed to have an opinion? I have no sentimental attachment to the Smurfs. I never grew up with the show. My only knowledge of Smurfs comes from pop culture references and parodies. Whether a Smurf movie is good or bad means nothing to me.

Why would /co/ pay attention to the recent movie? It's very clear from the trailer that the movie is meant only for little kids.

Smurfette has blonde hair and Rhianna's blatantly-not-right-for-Smurfette voice.

I'm not well versed in Smurfs but isn't their whole shtick that each one of them has a really basic personality/occupation? I don't get how you can translate that into a feature with an overarching plot and stuff. An TV show makes more sense at least.

If I wanted to post my opinion that no one would read, I'd post it on Letterboxd.

Smurfs is a subpar movie. The stunt casting is beyond belief. There's a musical celebrity Paradox with the disco having Rihanna's "Please don't stop the music." Far too often the plot just stops to leave room to talk, exposit, and explain, even in crisis situations. The animation leaves something to be desired as the linework they simulate is bizarre and somewhat jittery. Nothing interacts in the real world segments. They don't even step on the grass. I was left wondering why they have "real world" segments at all. They don't even bother to lipsync to the main dance number at the start of the movie. I saw that being played to WAP and somehow that was even more fitting.

In a crowded theater, my experience was:

A kids cried at the sight of the Poots. There was heavy snoring by the time they got Mad Max-y in Australia. Someone put up a tablet in front of their kid after the escape from the castle. The joke that most landed was "Kick@$$ Smurf."

OP's image is not a screenshot from Smurfs (2025).

The plot of the last two movies is that the protagonist smurf doesn't know his or her place in the village and has to find one.

I imagine the budget went something like
Rihanna is Smurfette, $25 million dollars
James Cordon, $20 million dollars
The rest of the Celebrities like Jimmy Kimmel, Nick Kroll, Marshmello for $5 million dollars
and the actual budget / rest of the budget of $8 million went to pay some guys in Quebec, Vancouver, and/or Montreal to animate.

I dislike that they renamed Clockwork Smurf Diaper Daddy in this reboot. Also as someone who really likes the 80s cartoon as a soft fantasy adventure show I wish they'd do more of that than all this bland comedy shit. Smurfs is at its best when it's telling stories about magic and adventure.
