>What went wrong?
>After Acclaim’s 2004 bankruptcy, the company’s assets were purchased as part of Valiant Entertainment by entrepreneurs Dinesh Shamdasani and Jason Kothari in 2005.[2][3] In 2011, Valiant received a capital infusion from private investment company Cuneo & Company, LLC. Peter Cuneo and Gavin Cuneo joined the company and a relaunch was announced.[4]

>Valiant Entertainment launched its publishing division in 2012 as part of an initiative dubbed the "Summer of Valiant",[5][6] winning Publisher of the Year and being nominated for Book of the Year at the Diamond Gem Awards.[7] Valiant has set sales records,[8] and was the most nominated publisher in comics at the 2014, 2015 and 2016 Harvey Awards,[9][10][11] releasing the biggest-selling independent crossover event of the decade with "Book of Death" in 2015.[12]

>Valiant was sold to DMG Entertainment in 2018.[13] In June 2023, Valiant Comics announced a licensing partnership with Alien Books, which would take over publishing Valiant's characters

honestly I can see Valiant being bought out by Marvel, it's certainly a better fate for their characters to be in the Marvel universe and the branding will be enough to get ongoings for some and grab the attention of new readers

I really liked Valiant back in 2012. I got a Humble Bundle way back that had most of the Summer of Valiant stuff and fell in love with the characters and the world. It was expansive enough to feel lived in and able to grow, but compact enough that it was manageable to read all the issues per month to follow along in a reasonable manner. Each character had a certain archetype and genre that they represented and gave a lot of variety as each one finished a run and opened up a space for a different or returning character to appear.

Unfortunately with their push for Faith, as much as I like her in the ensemble cast of Harbinger, she wasn't the best flagship character to push the universe on people who needed convincing.

Not truly. Their biggest one isn't even technically theirs, Turok, since that was a character created by Gold Key in the 50s, but he got his videogame fame based on his 90s comics version of him owned by Valiant. After him it would be Shadowman, also the Acclaim version of Valiant. After that there's been the artificial push of Faith which has only been to score progressive points, and Vin Diesel's Bloodshot movie from 2020 that even without the pandemic wouldn't have done too well anyways.

It's a pity because they do have cool characters. Archer and Armstrong are some of my favorites just because of the goofiness with them as an odd couple, and Divinity is a fun take of the Doctor Manhattan type all powerful being. XO Manowar is basically a mix of Captain America's fish out of temporal water dialed to 11 along with Blue Beetle's living armor, and Toyo Harada is basically what if professor X was a Japanese villanous businessman.

I stopped reading when they decided to brutally murder the kid superheroes in Generation Zero as part of the leadup to some shitty event comic. I thought it was very disrespectful to Dysart, who had put genuine effort into making an interesting team of superheroes. They didn't seem to care about letting him finish executing his vision for a very unique and interesting superhero story, and just handed his characters over to company hacks to abuse.

They spent loads of time building up goodwill with their fanbase, and then just sold out the second they got a good pricetag to some shitty chinese company, and now Valiant is basically an IP farm for a failed cinematic universe. Immensely disappointing, because their 2012 relaunch was so promising.
