Will it ever be possible to digitally replicate the look of 90s cel animation?
Another question, is there an audience for it?

AI will do it

Anons on this board can barely tolerate animation that's even partially rigged. Just how the fuck do you expect AI to be accepted?

Even if it's possible, you still know that it's just an imitation of actual cel animation from that era.

as an oldfag it makes me nostalgia, hand drawn animation just has the soul but i understand why they went digital, to save money, ughh.

>hand drawn animation just has the soul but i understand why they went digital,
You can still do hand drawn on digital
Cel refers to the painting process on cel paper

Nah. Kids don't care for 2d animation and also they don't care about "practical effects" for them, it doesn't look any better than CGI and they don't have any nostalgic attachment to these things

I'm pretty sure you already can, it's just there's fairly little incentive for most creators to do that.

Unfortunately I don't have any /co/ examples to use as an example (unless someone wants to help out), but I'm genuinely curious: do you guys actually want cels back because you think there's some kind of physical quality to them that got lost, or do you guys just miss color palettes that weren't fucked up the ass?

Cel-shaded shows just have a more down to earth/natural, digital shading just feels too cinematic

I feel anons play up le grain (that comes from the film it's shot/mastered on, not the actual cels) and le hand crafted. No studio is EVER going through the trouble of hand painting every single fucking frame, hell, they stopped drawing directly on the cels long before it died. The would print the lineart with a machine.
For whatever reason, digital ink and paint cartoons chose the weirdest colors that could be easily remedied.

I know it's not /co/, but wasn't there a Japanese commercial with DBZ characters that resembled the look of the original anime?

It’s too sharp. Can it replicate the grain of shitty crtvs

it's definitely a loss of darker colors. but brighter, unnatural colors tends to attract kids more. Pokemon is a perfect example of this and you can see the progression from season to season.

You virtually couldn't see the 480p compression on a crt back then, it looks so blurry and pixelated on a modern screen by comparison

To be fair almost no home release of Dragon Ball has good colors, even Toei cannot properly grade the home media release of their own movie since they just keep the white point theatre settings.

season 1 of Pokemon had genuinely beautiful animation and I'm not just saying that as a nostalgiafag, it's amazing that a cartoon that was only made to sell toys could look that good
