nobody does. they just prefer the classic S symbol. the nu woke-media diagonal-stripe S is not only terrible, it (or a very similar variant) has been used previously to represent "Superman has massively lost his way" like in weird alternate dark future stuff. it is not the logo. Put it back
and while we're at it, stop making batman's chest-bat into a brick. it's supposed to be cool curves.

also Superman is not meant to have a collar. he has to show some clavicle.

basically no live action Superman has ever gotten it right, except maybe Lois and Clark. Because usually they make the blue far too cyan, especially Returns which darkened the red but not the blue. very odd choice.

The problem with a lot of simple costumes like this is that they really don't look all that great if they're too true to the source material. As much as you don't want to hear it, Reeve looks like he just walked out of a Halloween store. Superman really does benefit from alterations like making the material from thicker, fire retardant materials like pilot uniforms and parachute fabrics, which is what they claimed in the animated movie with Parasyte and Lobo. His outfit in the new movie looks like it can handle his flight speeds and the arctic weather of the Fortress.

It's mostly people who don't read comics who think the trunks aren't 'realistic' enough or something.

Like with Batman it makes sense I guess. But with Superman, it's like, fuck off. He's literally a flying alien from outer space. let him look fantastical.

>The problem with a lot of simple costumes like this is that they really don't look all that great if they're too true to the source material

First off, you're an idiot. Secondly they look bad in real life because they're trying too hard to be taken seriously. Even in the comics they're meant to look a little silly. Superman's costume doesn't not look like a costume to the people inside the comic. This isn't fucking complicated but you dullards lack so much imagination and have such a stick up your ass you can't understand something this simple. People are trying too hard to not look a little goofy that they wind up looking like complete morons. lastly, you're an idiot.

Especially a character like Superman who leans into the home spun sincerity side of things. They're meant to convey the idea of the strong man. The grant theatrics side of things. You're an idiot.

the Kingdom Come logo is because A) they can have it double as the House of El logo which resembles an S but not exactly (just like how MAWS did it), and more importantly B) Gunn described the film as a reverse-KC scenario where the established heroes/metahumans are kinda immoral or reckless in their actions and along comes Superman who sets an example for an ideal superhero, ushering in a new age of heroes that differ from previous generations in their ability to inspire hope and courage.

Gunn and Corenswet said that their version of Superman intentionally made his costume look silly so people aren't afraid of him. I think they dropped the ball because Reeveman suit is still perfect for that intent. Superman's suit as a concept is a timeless design that is impossible to look cool unless the man in it is doing something awesome.
Routhman's suit, even if it is supposed to be the same as Reeveman's despite the microscopic S insignia, looks goofy by default. But it looks cool when he is lifting an entire continent made of Kryptonite and chucking it into outer space.

But the problem, at least for me, is that the baggy leather suit looks silly... and ugly, plus they added those ugly New 52 lines.

I prefer the new one generally. I like that it seems real and tangible. A flight suit you can actually handle, take on and off, a true irl article of clothing. But the MOS is cool too for being so alien and stylized, a sci-fi like impossible suit.

Loud and wrong, people like this make this kinda thing thier personality
The 2D page and what is captured in 3D on celluloid are obviously, of course, no duh two very different things. The insistence on The Flash wearing a Party City outfit for example would look AWFUL. I think you know that though and it's like a gate keepy notion. "What you think he looks silly? Yeah, you're not a *real* comic fan like me, normie casual. He's supposed to look bad!" Besides human physiology does not work like an Alex Ross painting. Actors, with few exceptions, are not this hale and hearty, can not fill these suits out. There's a reason both Pattinson and Corenswet have collars. While controversial, it does make them appear stronger and more substantial than naked traps in spandex. Obv there's a perfect medium, retaining the classic iconography and staying somewhat as close to the original as possible, but of course they need to be reimagined for live action, it's just a reality.

I was honestly against the trunks and bummed Gunn said he went with them, favoring the look of the final Gleason suit instead, but to my surprise they wound up looking really good in the movie. I'm not sure why or how, maybe bc the more square look, anyway I'm a fan.

Love Ross, but he makes the heroes look like theyโ€™re wearing Halloween costumes. Green Lantern is an official space cop, his costume shouldnโ€™t look like spandex in my opinion. But Superman to basically wear a luchador costume, because he wears it for a similar purpose. But still, it shouldnโ€™t look like at least look resistant to the high flying action that Superman gets into. Something like Reeveโ€™s suit looked too flimsy. I like the idea that Supesโ€™ suit was made of a more resistant โ€œKryptonian fabricโ€

That's what they did. I agree w your intimation that those Tracy costumes are peak, they really are the high water mark. But things like the collars are in effect movie magic too. Anything more involved like prosthetics, on our heros at least, feels a little uncanny valley. Like the padded suits are one thing, a bit dated or played out in my opinion, but let's say prosthetic traps to match the image above. A bit ungainly.

I think the best way to do a Superman suit in live action is by giving up on trying to make it look 'realistic' and just recreate the comic book suit. It's Superman, people will accept seeing a guy in a Superman costume.

Plus I think it could be pretty funny if every other superhero was wearing some suit of tactical armor, made more realistic and shit, but Superman is out there in a 1920s carnival strongman get-up.

Especially for the time. They didn't exactly have tacticool back in the 70's. Reeve can't be beaten as Superman. The scene where he goes from Clark to Superman just by standing straight is never going to be beaten. Imagine Cavill or the new guy even trying that.
