Originally he was a guy named Clark Kent after Clark Kent from the comics, but he was also the Kal-El of his universe, which was Earth Prime, supposed to be the "real" world.
He was a nice guy for a while, and then Crisis on Infinite Earths just destroyed his universe, so he stayed in some dimension where he saw the New Earth develop, along with the original Kal-L and Lois, and Alexander Luthor Jr. from Earth-3.
Because New Earth was different and edgy, he grew to hate it, and with the help of Alexander, tried to bring the old wholesome Earths back, becoming a villain.
It was around that time that they turned him into a parody of comic book nerds, always wanting things to go back to how they were when he was young.
Eventually, a bunch of shit happened that doesn't really matter, he did some bad stuff, he killed some titans, he killed someone to death, etc.
What matters is that after a reboot and a deboot, he was back as a prisoner in the Rock of Eternity. He escaped, did some bad stuff, which eventually culminated in Death Metal.
Basically he teamed up with Batkek to make his perfect Earth, but Wondy said that Superman wouldn't do that, so he joined the good guys, beat up Batkek, and ended up back in his original Prime Earth reality.
He put down his comics, and then went out with his gf.
