Introducing the characters and the setting and the premise and how all the powers work and stuff And they manage to do it in a way that feels natural and not like you're being exposited to which is something not a lot of shows can pull off. People complain about the townie episodes and other filler like that and I get it but it definitely serves its purpose of easing you into things and getting you attached before the plot kicks in

When Pearl betrayed Garnet to form Sardonyx it took like 4 fucking episodes for her to finally apologize. Peridot pissed off Amethyst, once, and felt bad despite barely knowing her, then logically assessed that she's bad at apologies and recorded her best one so she could play it back, literally the very next episode.

She then prioritized Steven's mental health when confronting the Cluster in the drill even though she doesn't have to care at all and could've just said "fuck you kid, grow a pair or we're gonna die". She's genuinely supportive and caring. Peridot lost her limb enhancers and still brain mogged the fuck out of the Crystal Gems at every opportunity. She's smarter, more mature, and more logical.

There's nothing to suggest that fusions work differently based on who you're fusing with and only a tangential argument can be made that it might be different for organic lifeforms even though based on what we've seen that doesn't appear to be the case. That's why the "fusions = sex" metaphor doesn't work. They originally said it wasn't like that at all and platonic when people started complaining it was inappropriate for a kids show, but then they slowly tried walking it back which always backfires in their face for no other reason then Steven fusing with his Dad and the Gems.

Rewatching the series really makes you understand how much of a fucking crybaby Lapis is. It is astounding.

This is the unfortunate truth, and while write what you know is a good trope, it's grating when the only people writing live in L.A. It's such an insular bubble that's not relatable to the general audience and it's actually quite obnoxious to always fall back on: "Rest of country bad, move to L.A. to work in entertainment industry." There's examples I could list of this getting worked into shows it has no place being (such as You Season 2) but I don't want to go on a tirade.

While people dislike the Townie episodes (I don't) I do think there could be some nice content to be had from a slice of life esque adventure of Steven driving across country on a soul searching journey. Especially if maybe halfway through he finds out sh*t absolutely hit the fan back home and he gets pulled into some planet ending crises out of nowhere about half to two thirds the way through.
