Bad writing? That's almost always the explanation for media as basically no one has the patience to do such a transformation "naturally". Like how the fuck is Kitty Bi when people have explored that aspect before and said 'nah she's not bi', just writers stepping on their or other peoples toes.
If you're instead referring to real life usually what happens is that someone in a bad place gets wrapped up in a community and completely reinvents themself to better fit in with their new social group. Often times they end up not really understanding said group and are just acting out as many surface level qualities as they possibly can. It really isn't health and often leads to major burnout and leaving said social group.
