I'm guessing you can only move one stop every time, can decide for yourself which direction you go, and depending what spot you choose to land on you pick up a different card (a lava card, an island card, a forest card, a pyramid card, etc) and your outcome is decided on what you roll
you can't put your piece on the mountain cards so maybe that's where the Dragon Lair is. It's probably how you end the game by defeating the Dragon encounter, which means the score accumulating you do beforehand helps you beat it
