>Gene Luen Yang, the Eisner-winning creator of acclaimed graphic novel American Born Chinese, is picking up the katana to take on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for IDW Publishing.
>Yang, who also penned the Eisner and Harvey-winning story Superman Smashes the Klan, will be the new writer of the ongoing comic, ushering in a new run beginning with issue no. 13.
>Freddie E. Williams II, who previously worked on Batman/TMNT, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, Godzilla vs Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, will be the new artist on the title.
>The two pick up from writer Jason Aaron and artist Juan Ferrerya, the current team whose back-to-basics approach relaunched the book to best-selling status last year. Their finale closes with issue no. 12 in September. Yang and Williams’s run launches in December.

>Yang grew up watching the classic 1980s cartoon with his brother and then reenacted the Turtles’ adventures with their action figures. He read his first issue of TMNT at a friend’s house and \was “blown away by the melding of gritty martial arts action and wild, out-of-left-field ideas,” he said in a statement.
>But he is also aware of the comics’ legacy as a pioneer in independent comics, knowing full well that their work cleared the path for other writers and artists to follow.
>“All of us from that corner of comics owe a huge debt to (TMNT creators) Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird,” stated Yang, who also wrote a recent Shang-Chi mini-series for Marvel and created Monkey Prince for DC. “Their talent and creativity, both as comics creators and as businessmen, carved out a path for the rest of us to follow. In fact, the very first comic I ever self-published was funded by a grant from Peter Laird’s Xeric Foundation.”

>Williams had previously drawn TMNT covers as well as cross-overs with Batman and He-Man, but this is his first crack at the interiors.
>“I love the Ninja Turtles, the original Mirage comics were instrumental in making me fall in love with the comic book medium,” he enthused. “And, of course I am super inspired by the power and texture in that early Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird art!”
>Much of the new story line is being kept under the manhole, but it will begin with the Turtles reunited and feeling hopeful about the future of the city. But, naturally, that doesn’t last as a dark and personal danger lurking in the shadows, the deadly new assassin Ujigami, makes their presence known.

>For the launch of the new team, IDW will be offering a special blind bag variant for collectors, featuring variant covers from creators such as Daniel Warren Johnson, David Nakayama, Clayton Crain, and others. The main cover will be by Williams and a variant will be drawn by Dustin Nguyen.
>The issue will hit Dec. 10, with the pre-order deadline being Oct. 20.
>>149507646I think the world he built within his NSM/JLC corner of the universe over those couple years was really impressive. Kind of nuts and bolts good capeshit storytelling, and nice repartee between the team/characters which bodes well for this.
>>149507570 (OP)>Freddie E. Williams II, who previously worked on Batman/TMNT, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, Godzilla vs Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, will be the new artist on the title. At least the art will be great. Hopefully he has enough pull to tard wrangle Yang if it becomes needed.
That said SStK isn't terrible, just uninspired. His foundations seem solid though and honestly "Not dogshit, just basically functional" is the modern age's equivalent of superstar quality desu.
>>149507570 (OP)I don't envy the work this man is going to have to do to unfuck the unbelievable damage Aaron did to TMNT for the past year and change. Imagine having to pick through the story bits after some retarded faggot ripped the previous storylines he inherited to shit, shoved in yet another timeskip, butchered half the characters and shoved the rest into side comics where they practically don't exist, and the entire thing hinges on a mystery argument that happened off screen, so bad that 13 years of character development vanished when no one was looking.
>>149508269I’m hoping for a solid soft reboot. Where nothing between an old issue and then I’d mentioned.
A Chinese guy is gonna write about Ninjas? Um, can you say cultural appropriation?
>>149508543And he's not even from New York!
>>149508543and he's not even a real turtle
>>149508540They're picking up with issue #13, so it's probably just going to be

What's going on at IDW now? Hasn't Bobby been in charge there for a while now?
>>149509193IDW TMNT really is a DC/Marvel book now, isn't it? An endless conveyer belt of writer/artist teams passing each other the continuity baton.
>>149510814It ran for nearly a decade on a single head writer, and then 5 more years (mostly) under a different one. Switching authors every dozen or so issues now is typical capeshit comic behavior and it's never a good sign, especially not with a company doing as badly as IDW who hasn't had a top 10 best seller in the past year.
The last thing they released that sold well was the #1 issue at 2nd best seller of the month of the Jason Aaron relaunched last July, according to ICv2. Every issue after that dropped and dropped into the high 20s and worse.
>>149507646The problem is even in Mutant Nation series, Tom Waltz and others gave up on explaining some of the remaining questions in the story to bridge the gap between vol 1 and 2. Will Jason Aaron clear up this whole 'dead rat is Splinter' thing? Or just leave this mess to other?
As long as IDW turtles finally show some backbone. The only time that IDW turtles isn't an incompetent loser was in AU comic TMNT 20/20.
If they still want to keep "no kill rule", that's fine, but at least let Donnie finally take revenge on B&R himself. Leo will give Karai and Shredder a slap in the face because he's had enough of this Oroku family scum who never learned the lesson. Mikey's gonna hit harder than before because he's mad at these assholes too. As for Raph, I hope he end up living a life of farmer, because this is his true desire.
>>149511779The fuck was he even responding to that make him write this giant spergy thesis paper?
>>149507570 (OP)He's Chinese, so my hopes aren't very high that he'll really care about Japanese culture and what the fuck ninja are, and all those other things that irk me. However, I fully expect him to be able to do a better job than Jason Aaron at handling the foreign culture elements that often pop up with TMNT. Aaron is such and ignorant faggot that, twice, he made me go
>wow that's actually a really ill-informed, racist portrayal of a foreign culture

>back-to-basics approach
Hey, /co/? I haven't kept up with the book. Was Aaron's writing "back to basics"?
>>149513843Meh, being Chinese makes him no less or more qualified than the original creators. Unless he brings baggage.
>>149507570 (OP)>>149507643>the deadly new assassin Ujigami, makes their presence known. And? More bloated shit is coming. How will they deal with these previous shit? For now, these bloated roles are just being temporarily ignored and not killed.
Since the turtles will be cleared in the next issue or #12, will the Foot Clan going to start getting swept up by the military and and kicked out of the US because of what they did in New York? Maybe the US government will also use diplomatic mean to ask the japanese government to eradicate Foot Clan.
I do think Jason Aaron struggled to get the Turtles personalities down. Even with Don recovering he doesn't seem like himself, and Raph and Mike constantly arguing doesn't fit their IDW versions.
>>149517292That's because he made up new personalities for all of them and invented mystery drama to justify it.
>>149515947go back to sucking dicks on reddit
>>149514652>Was Aaron's writing "back to basics"?Not even remotely. I don't think they've eaten a single slice of pizza in the last several issues.
>>149510586>>149510814Hello Technodrome forum.
That was fast. Dunno who the new guy is, but okay.
>>149518013Don did. It was rotten and filthy.
>>149517853They turned Donnie into a crazy hippie, just like they forgot that IDW Leo was the first of the four to learn about the spirit world and has the deepest connection to it.
>>149518479Then they had Leo try to achieve spiritual enlightenment by going to India so he could kill himself by being eaten by turtles that verifiably do not eat people. The guy who has been to the spirit world multiple times and fought evil demi-gods there thought the only way to get some spiritual peace was by killing himself.
>>149507570 (OP)I like Yang so I'll give it a shot, but he's got a shitload of baggage to sift through. I don't envy the task of unfucking the Turtles in a post-Mutant Town, post-Armageddon Game, post-Jason Aaron world whatsoever. That's three strikes back to back to back, good fucking luck.
>>149518315>That was fast.13 issues? A year? One fucking YEAR?
>>149518550I mean, in comic terms it was. I guess.
>>149518529I think even if he wanted to write a story that would have a huge impact on IDW TMNT, the others might stop him, just like Campbell did want to write a "Escape from New York" arc and planned to kill Old Hob, but Tom Waltz wouldn't allow that to happen.
>>149508269>>149508540Maybe they should continue with other AU comic story like TMNT: Deviations.
>>149518766Maybe better to just scrap the whole thing and let it rest for a few years. Strip IDW of the license and find someone else to work on it who isn't retarded and has an editorial department that will actually shoot down terrible ideas like Armageddon Game and the sort of shit Jason Aaron is doing.
>>149519964HEY! I heard at least Saturday Morning Adventures is decent enough, so maybe don't take away the license entirely.
>>149520956Oh, its amazing. Most of the crossovers have been fun too. Plus they're collecting Archie TMNT in hardcover, so they have to finish that first.
>>149520956Saturday Morning Adventures is consistently good, but it's not enough to offset how bad IDW TMNT comics have been for a long time.
>>149507570 (OP)Damn, was Aaron's run doing THAT badly?
>>149523445It went from #2 to #30 in terms of monthly sales in the first 6 months of publication.
