a Lex Luthor who made sense.
a Jor-El who wasnt a murderous psycho.
a militarized Lex Luthor base that can get reinforcements within an hour after a violent attack.
a better security system for containing Superman that isnt just an emotional guy.

It was too stuck in the Silver Age and made too many assumptions about what you already know about Superman. I can understand not wanting to recycle the origin story, but some things like Kryptonite being Superman's weakness just come from nowhere. It's a movie for a specific era of Superman fans, but that era was 50 years ago.

This is such a widely known weakness that kryptonite is in our vernacular as a catch all term for a weakness.
There is no need to explain it

You have to at least introduce something if it's going to come up as a plot point. It just takes five seconds to mention it earlier in the story. Might as well not mention that Superman is from Krypton, and just keep calling an alien with zero context because "everyone knows".
Anonymous No.149524456

They literally introduce it thought. They talk about how will they restrain him because there's no kryptonite left on earth, and Lex says something along the lines of "I have a solution to that problem" in reference to the element dude.

I didn't like how Superman got his ass kicked the entire movie. The movie states he's been active for 3 years so I expected him to be decently capable as a combatant, but he couldn't even land some decent shots on Ultraman until the drones were gone. It got kind of exhausting after a while

i dont mind the idea of Superman getting beat up by a clone of himself, however i think it's very stupid that apparently Lex is just actively calling out the fight moves... yeah bro... i'm sure the guy who's faster than a speeding bullet can't react to attacks that need to be literally called out by a third person... Of course, the cloning in general is a problem of it's own considering Lex was able to make an entire clone of Superman from a single hair... and can make the clone completely obedient, but the clone is really dumb at the same time? How can you make a clone of Superman, powers and all, but you can't make him intelligent enough to make tactical decisions of his own? You couldn't use the DNA and cloning technology to make multiple enhanced individuals or something? Shit doesn't make sense, even for a Superman movie.

Funny how this thread came out just as I finished it.

I loved it, pure KINO. My only problem is how they didn't address Hawkgirl killing the president of Boravia. I get he was an evil asshole but you can't just have a metahuman killing the leader of a huge power without some kind of political uproar. Maybe they're saving it for the sequel?

Masculinity. Honor. Heart. Reading or watching Superman should inspire you to be like him. I am not inspired to be like this Superman because this Superman identifies solely as James Gunn. Clark wouldn't be unable to gain an animal's respect and instruct it through experience. James Gunn can't. Clark can intimidate Lex without breaking into hysterics and wailing like a crazy person. James Gunn can't. Look at the way he writes love interests. They're all the same! They're the exact same man having a conversation with James Gunn' latest self insert. Pa Kent can inspire his son to be more. James Gunn can't because James Gunn has never written nor presented a father figure in a positive light over the course of his entire career. He doesn't know how. Look at how he chose to portray Jor-El. Easy for a childless adult to shirk writing the loving affection of a parent and child. That's more a reflection of James' mentality than he should acknowledge that he's sharing but whatever. I don't believe he understands or even appreciates fatherhood. He doesn't know God--or didn't at the time of the script writing and that's the biggest element write there. He doesn't get God or fatherhood so he doesn't get Superman, who is supposed have the warmth and strength and unrelenting durability and resolve of dependability modeling everyone's father. Or giving a model of how every person would try to be. Strong enough to be an example to others to not do the wrong thing. Clark exhibits the best thing about humanity. And when we reflect that to one another we find that world becomes a better place. And if you dig deeper you find christian values as the character, like every good protagonist and story should be designed, leads the reader to knowledge of their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

This isn't Clark Kent. This is James Gunn as Superman. Look at the hubris. Superman is looking UP at James Gunn's name. James Gunn is so insecure that he made sure audiences know that HE comes first.

hyper contrived writing wherein the message is perfectly cut right before he says a bunch of evil shit, and the message leading up to the cut is all nice and wholesome sounding.
idk why they didnt just write it in that Lex only had the first half of the message, but then AI'd the rest to make it sound evil. Doesn't need to be true, Lex's plan should be to defame Superman.

It's missing a lot more of Gunn's modern style. Gunn was clearly playing it safe to try and appeal to mass audiences and that's fine. But it's hard to not notice his typical way of doing films like Guardians, Suicide Squad and even Creature Commandos felt mostly and intentionally restrained here.
