The kids who grew up with media telling them "bullying is wrong" and "maybe the reclusive kid isn't a weirdo and just needs a friend" actually listened. Modern cartoonists don't feel the need to use their creations to fulfill childhood revenge fantasies because their childhood didn't suck. Columbine also had a hand in that, as much as people don't like to admit it.
