Is the push to make Cyborg a Justice League member just totally fucking dead now that Gunn had a successful movie with a black league member people actually like? Cyborg can finally go back to the Teen Titans
Reminder that this entire decade long push only happened because Geoff Johns wanted Hal on the League and the only black character he could think of was Cyborg

>Is the push to make Cyborg a Justice League member just totally fucking dead
It died with Snyder-verse.

> now that Gunn had a successful movie with a black league member people actually like?
Not really the reason why he's there. Although Fisher and Snyder did set the character back for the mass audience.

>Cyborg can finally go back to the Teen Titans
He never left. Payton's work is still the mainstream version of the character.

>Reminder that this entire decade long push only happened because Geoff Johns wanted Hal on the League and the only black character he could think of was Cyborg
Ridiculous.

Mr Terrific just makes more sense than Cyborg because he fulfills a role DC doesn't really have (super smart man ala Reed Richards) which makes him easy to shoehorn into any story.

Cyborg on the JL had the issue that, as much as they tried to pretend otherwise, Vic will always be forever be associated with the (Teen) Titans first and foremost. I know Mr Terrific is associated with the JSA, but come on not even the few JSA hardcore fans care all that much.

He also had the issue that he looked out of place because he is the Frankenstein monster of the Justice League right next to the perfect-looking human beings that are the other JL characters (which led to controversy: https://themiddlespaces.com/2015/03/31/humanity-not-included/ and all the controversy over if he had a penis or not). He never really had this issue in the Titans because other characters like Beast Boy, Raven or Starfire were also clearly "freaks" in their own ways.

Something like the first arc of New 52 Justice League happened, but it takes place before the official formation of the Justice League, and it says Cyborg was placed in suspended animation after (presumably to set up him joining the New Teen Titans)

I always thought Vixen would have made a good replacement for J'onn since she's got cool powers but is essentially a blank slate for writers to do with as they please since she's not really the most consistent character. That said, Johns was right that the League needed a tech guy in the modern age but Mr. Terrific was a much better joice. Cyborg will always be seen as a Titan. Its why he was downgraded back to Titan status in the comics.
>>149531089
Doom Patrol was probably the best version of Cyborg since they didn't just lean into the "woe is me" shit. He was really gung-ho about being a good hero, and while his relationship with his dad was rocky it never felt like it couldn't be repaired and I think that makes Cyborg a much more interesting character than when they write his dad as irredeemable.

I actually wondered about this. Cyborg is very prominent in the first few covers and the first issue, but then by the second issue he is taken off the book never to be seen again. Was Snyder mandated to use Cyborg for JL 2017 synergy and then when the movie flopped he was able to throw him out?

I haven't read Snyder's JL run but I think that DC and WB just gave up trying to make Cyborg work at that point. When JL came out the general public took one look at the roster and said "Isn't Cyborg a Teen Titan? When is the Teen Titans movie?" or "Why isn't the black guy Green Lantern?" Cyborg just wasn't happening for DC the way they expected it to when they chose Cyborg for the New 52 JL roster. And remember too they really tried Cyborg was a found JL member, featured in the JL movie, had two or three failed solo titles, took over Young Justice, was featured in Teen Titans Go, and was at announced for Doom Patrol all in the span of a few years. And no one cared anymore about him or viewed him as anything other than a Teen Titans character.

I feel like Vixen's greatest strength is she's never had a character defining run or arc. In her original JL run she's just a generic angry black woman, and then a lot of other writers just kind of give her the personality of a piece of ply wood. She really needs that defining run. I think the best she had was Justice League Unlimited but even then she's just a tool to wedge in between Hawkgirl and John's relationship. She's not really a character.

I hope so. I never liked Cyborg as a League member. If they need a black guy (they don't) they could use John Stewart, Black Lightning, or even Static.
>>149530587
While you make a good point, I don't like that, personally. The Smart guy character is a good trope, but it's nice how the League always has to work together to figure things out. Making one of them the Reed Richards is just going to turn it into: "Oh, there's a problem, lets ask the brainy guy."
>>149531101
What if instead of a black guy we brought back Apache Chief? Apache Chief is fun.
>>149531172
I think it opens a can of worms about the other Titans. What about Robin/Nightwing? Starfire, Raven, and Beast Boy? All of them could be useful the only problem is they're young, but if one of them has matured enough to join it stands to reason we're getting to the point they all could, too. Keeping them separate is better unless you're doing a JLU type thing.
>>149531207
Vixen wouldn't be a bad choice. A little weird for being an OG member, though. I get the push for diversity, but the whole point of the JL origin is it's the heavyweights/most popular characters forming a team. The DCAU had the right idea by just using the black Green Lantern since it's hard to argue Green Lantern isn't one of the most popular DC Superheroes.
>>149531378
If you think there's a chance they actually do JSA, then I agree, but they could also just use the original Mister Terrific at that point.

Yeah, but ironically Cyborg's connection with the Titans kinda saved him because he will show up pretty quickly in the DCU.

Meanwhile Gunn isn't even trying to disimulate Flash or Aquaman aren't just being shelved for a long time due to the DCEU (And Barry will probably never be Flash again in anything important) and that's despite a very successful TV show and a $1 billion movie.

>Johns was right that the League needed a tech guy in the modern age but Mr. Terrific was a much better joice.
Especially because Cyborg is not a "tech" guy, really. He's mutated into one because it's a very easy thing to do given his powerset, but that was not actually his deal originally. It was the tension between this "all american boy" jock and his scientist father and the ruins of a life after his accident and reconstruction. He could "do" some tech stuff, but he was not actually supposed to be "go do tech on this device to solve the problem!" as a character.

But we're probably long past that point by now, so it doesn't really matter I guess.

Cyborg is fine. The reason why his titan version is better it's because it allows him to be more jovial and more like his football persona. The Justice League are the big leagues, so people expect the members to be more "professional" (Save for maybe the Flash and Guy when he's in the league). Then a "professional, serious" cyborg is just boring tech guy.

If Cyborg was on the Justice League as a grown man in his late 20s nobody would have cared. The problem wasn't putting Vic on the team, the problem was putting him on the team while wiping out all 30 years of his character's history and all his closest friendships and resurrecting his dad and tying his powers and origins to the New Gods of all things.

like others have said, the issue wasn't Cyborg growing up and getting into the JL, because that would actually be a competent story arc for him. the problem is with New 52 completely retconning his origin and making him a stoic and serious JL member from the start, removing 90% of what people like about him and reducing his worth to just "black guy who understands tech", Snyder did the same thing with the DCEU except I guess he planned for more emotional depth had he full control over whatever saga he was planning. Cyborg starting out in the Titans as a humorous jock before stepping up to JLA is a wonderful story if done well, but that's not what happened

Which was a Dwayne's Ego production, written with a collection of tedious OC's including using a hairless (get it, hairless, ha ha ha) guinea pig as Luther's pet. No one is going to reference it and other than the already written so they still pushed it out graphic novel, it won't ever be referenced in the comics continuity even as an Elseworld, ever again.

You know King will shove in Comet like he did in Super Woman of Tomorrow so we're far more likely to get a classic Super Pets that that shitty waste of a cartoon movie release.
