Spoilers ahead
Movie starts with Sue being pregnant. F4 is universally beloved and has been active for 3 years.
F4 goes to space to reason w/ Galactus (they have a FTL engine), he's willing to spare Earth if F4 gives him baby Franklin; Galactus can sense the Power Cosmic in him
In the ensuing chase Sue gives birth on the ship
Johnny isn't gay despite rumors. He finds Silver Surfette (Shalla-Bal) hot and she's sympathetic to Earth, but it was a one-sided attraction
Johnny's arc is deciphering Silver Surfette's language and he uses that to reason with her in the final act
Pedro Pascal is whatever as Reed, his plan is initially to teleport the entire Earth away from Galactus, but it ends up being teleporting Galactus away from Earth. Real big brain moment
Sue dies after going Super Saiyan and using her forcefields to push Galactus into a wormhole, but Franklin brings her back
Johnny was about to sacrifice himself to finish pushing Galactus into the wormhole but Surfette knocks him out of the way, sacrificing herself instead
The Thing does nothing

True. Reed dates several women throughout the movie while Sue only dates Reed. It's how they get their hero names. Sue is Invisible Woman because no one can see her. Mr Fantastic is pretty self explanatory (he can make his penis very big).

Maybe I was rooting too much for this movie to be good; the aesthetics were there, and I didn’t mind the cast as much as the people seething over whether Reed Richards has a moustache.
But boy, this was bland. You can tell it was sanded away by committee. The only thing that stuck, and that seems unintentional, is that the FF are basically the benevolent dictators of Earth.

Lee/Kirby is legendary, but it might not be of your liking if you're not into silver age type of writing. Waid/Wieringo is the best modern starting point. It strips the concept down to it's basics while emphasizing it's pulpy nature. Movie felt too much a like a sequel to a movie we never got. There were so many emotional moments that didn’t land as hard because we didn’t know the characters. Don’t like that Surfer was turned into a woman just so Johnny wouldn’t have homolust. Galactus kept changing size throughout the climax. Good movie but felt like it should have been F4 3. Doom should have been movie 1 with Moleman as a minor villain or something. Really felt like they were trying to rush Galactus so we could get him in Doomsday or whatever Avengers comes next.
Anonymous No.149542669 >>149544550
The movie felt like 80% of a mostly decent Star Trek episode (classic moral quandry ie one life vs many, smartest people in the world struggle to find a solution to an inhuman unstoppable cosmic force), and 20% mediocre action scene. I wish that Galactus wasn't so one-note, that his hunger curse wasn't underdeveloped, and that the solution was more creative, like they actually tried negotiating and finding a way to help him with his hunger.

I appreciated that Johnny was actually portrayed as a decently smart guy in this one. It was always weird to me that other movies made him a fratboy idiot. Dude is an astronaut, those people are meant to be intelligent.
Anonymous No.149542711 >>149542781 >>149542794
I liked most of the movie but it really should have been longer. Ben feels completely superfluous, they tease his angst over being a monster so briefly and then its never addressed again and its not like they're going to get another shot after this so why bother? Its a very boneless fantastic four, it doesn't have time to address any of the meat of the family in any substantial way. Reeds guilt is another thing thats vaguely there but doesn't factor in too much. Also the Moleman adaptation was fucking cowardly. Give me my horrible mole freak and his goblins. What the hell was that CW shit? Reed barely stretches, he does no weird shit in this. Its exclusively limited to his arms and legs. Dude doesn't get to turn into a big tarp or a ball or anything. Galactus looks amazing (looks so much better when he turns off his glowy eyes), not hugely into how hes written. Ineson kills it, but the dialogue itself lacks the grand operatic lee/kirbyness the character needs. He just feels kind of petty. Still the best F4 movie.

The runtime is definively the film's biggest weak point. The main meat (the family dynamic) is left in good form, but some 15 extra minutes could've left space for characters and plots that, while not the main focus, would've added a lot to the movie. The villains specially; combined, I don't think Galactus and SS make more than 15 minutes of screentime.

Yeah and its not even like the final cut is that long either. Its barely over 1h50m right? They're terrified of hitting that 2 hour mark now. I loved the space stuff, I honestly could have gone for an entire movie focused on their outerspace voyage to negotiate with Galactus, exploring some alien world, getting their shit wrecked and scrambling back to Earth for the sequel. But the MCU has its schedule to keep I guess.

Without credits I'd say the film clocks at 1 hour and 45 minutes. I also agree the space sequence is the best part of the film, and overall the pacing gets steadier and more consistent from that point on. It's mainly the first half that feels specially rushed.

Johnny listens to it and then after Surfer comes to earth, she says something in a non-english language directly to Johnny which he pieces together as the same language in all those messages that Reed intercepted from space. He spends most of the movie listening to them to decipher the language then listens to all those messages again which he translates as people from Shala-Bal's planet broadcasting out to space to try and bring her back home, but also some last words of people from planets that Galactus destroyed as well

Reason # 638479 why using a chick Silver Surfer was dumb. Her hair (and to a lesser degree, her breasts) ruin the illusion and just look silly. Silver Surfer is cool because he's almost like a mannequin, complete with Barbie Doll anatomy. He's a bald guy without super defined features but you can tell by his muscular physique that he's human enough to be a guy and the reflective silver and zooming through space on a surfboard is cool enough that it all works. This just looks silly.

Also, what the heck is this scene, it's like she turns her head 240 degrees while the camera is trying to circle around to her. Is this AI, too?

So a "passable 6-7/10" movie is guaranteed a high score on Rotten Tomatoes, but it doesn't actually average the ratings. Shang-Chi for example has like a 92% on RT.

The appeal doesn't work out on her out of nowhere. She earlier expresses concern to Galactus about seaking the fate of what is literally just a baby, and Johnny gets through to her by specifically appealing to the idea of family, which triggers the memory of her daughter.

I think the problem is that it forces the whole "a million is a statistic" thing ontto the movie. Galactus has eaten literally countless babies, across as many worlds but this ONE is the only one that we're supposed to feel bad about and it's the final straw worth changing sides for, because it's related to the main characters.

It's the same kind of logic that goes "If I to kill the villain I'm as bad as them" but the henchmen on the way to the villain are fair game.

That's unnecesarily convoluted and, if you're going to commit to it, in need of more time to develop. Fall of Adam works better in the context of a short movie.

I understand that logic, but I think that what makes the conflict make sense is the particular circumstances around Franklin. Galactus doesn't just want to kill him, he wants to forcibly pass on his mantle to him, condemning the boy to an eternity of the same suffering he's experienced for billions of years.

The movie does a piss poor job of establishing that as a fate worse than death. It's just too rushed for basically any of the characters to have any real depth.

I just saw the movie and I agree with them. I don't care about who's hurting who or powerlevel shit. The problem is Reed and Ben feel completely ineffectual in the final encounter and the only reason Johnny feels helpful is because he saves Ben and convinces Silver Surfer. He still didn't actually help push Galactus to the teleporter. Even when Reed figured out he could forcefully open those valves on Galactus suit it was just a momentary inconvenience and didn't actually bring them closer to saving the day. Sue literally did 90% of the work, then the Silver Surfer sealed the deal.

To be fair her powers seem to be the one with the highest potential? Reed could only stretch (poorly, in this movie), Ben punches, and Johnny shoots flame. By contrast "force fields" can go from itty bitty personal shield to giant fuck you forces. Plus it literally killed her

I feel like there were cooks in the kitchen who couldn't agree on Galactus.
He was willing to bargain with the FF when he could have chosen to both take Franklin and the earth, and he seemed way more careful to not fuck shit up on earth than he needed to be (implying he was going to honor the deal), but then he has that weird line about destroying the earth and making Franklin watch, and the fact that he just flat out seemed to find great amusement in torturing Reed, makes It harder to accept he was just doing what had to be done.

I saw it as him finally getting some personal stakes in what happens to him. He states that Franklin could be what finally puts his hunger to rest, and his interest in that takes prescedence over consuming the planet, and so is far more involved.

Kinda dull movie but Silver Surfer and her bellybutton were worth it.
I kinda liked some of the shop talk when they were piloting the ship and going through the operation procedures, but that leads directly into Sue giving birth on the ship which was cheesy and awkward.

Thunderbolts was a movie that tried to say something and if you didn't care about what it had to say there's nothing in it for you for over 2 hours.
FFFS is a standard superhero family movie where they save the day through the power of love and family with a little bit of family drama and dilemmas. It's extremely safe. You will be entertained but you won't remember it.

How does something like The Incredibles work but this, with the same ingredients, doesn't? Seemed like all the elements were there: sci-fi, family relationships, comedy, superheroing, aesthetics... but set up at minimum intensity. Felt like a rollercoaster that stops before the first drop.
