Yeah, there’s a clear difference in context. When a hero is trapped in a life-or-death brawl with a homicidal airborne bomb throwing lunatic, some ugly decisions get made under pressure. Sometimes that means the fight might end in lethal force, because the villain's threat level demanded it. Survival and saving your loved ones always take priority over whether the villain is treated with the kid gloves. That’s a far cry from choosing to hunt down a reluctant anti-hero who's no longer an active public danger.

That said, Norman Osborn cannot be truly absolved simply because his sins were mystically extracted. When Norman became the Gold Goblin it was a collision with everything he left behind rather than straightforward redemption. He remembers the pain he caused. He sees his victims as judgemental ghosts and Norman’s version of heroism seems performative and hollow. It feels less like Norman's doing it because it's the right thing and more to figure out who this fractured identity is without the sins that once shaped him.

In 616, the Goblin persona occasionally brought about memory lapses but those incidents were rare and usually triggered by other factors. Norman was an active participant in his actions. He built the weapons, plotted the violence, and reveled in the destruction he caused. Any psychological blurring between Norman and the Goblin doesn't erase his culpability. The Goblin did not act alone. Norman was complicit every step of the way.

Moral posturing doesn’t erase the fact that people were tortured and killed because of choices he made. His victims either still suffer with what he did to them or died because of him. His legacy as a villain remains.

Justice is not defined by who he claims to be now. It's shaped by the actions that were taken when Norman was fully conscious of the damage he was causing. Remorse means you remember. Accountability means you own it. Norman’s doing the first. Still waiting on more of the second.

Not sure why Marvel’s trying to turn Osborn into his No Way Home version when his 616 connection with the Goblin is way more unique. Compared to the movie's tragic but streamlined split personality take, 616's attempts at rebuilding a legacy on top of a rotted foundation cracked by trauma and abuse is an almost Shakespearean descent into psychological decay and corruption and all the more interesting for it.
