It's not in and of itself. But it's pretty clear that they've been doing stuff like this as a replacement for any actual effort at character development. If I don't like a character, I'm not going to care how they got a peg leg of it doesn't actually happen in the run of the show.

Any character that isn't a straight, white, able bodied man is "extra". Each trait different to that is +1 on the extra scale.
This girl is a lesbian, black, disabled woman. That's +4 extra. People tend to get upset if a character is more than +3 extra.
So if they want her to be a black disabled woman, she can't be a lesbian. If they want her to be a black lesbian, she can't be disabled. And so on.
A straight white man being disabled would obviously be fine, because that's only +1. They could even make him gay because that would only be +2. Some people would have issues with that, but as I said most people are willing to go up to a +3 before they start grumbling.
