Plastic Man
Unlike with other acquired characters, DC has never really made an honest attempt at trying to give Patrick "Eel" O'Brian his own corner of the DC Universe. Whenever he gets any focus, it's usually as part of a team, or in an Elseworld story.
Most people seem to like him just fine, so do you think Plas could work as a solo character again in this day and age?

You just need to put him in the hands of a good cartoonist who can draw funny superhero hijinks. It's remarkable how well the original Jack Cole strips hold up in their sense of humour. All you need to do is strike a tone similar to that.
If he doesn't have his own corner, I think that's largely down to how ephemeral those Cole stories are. They don't really give him a hometown, recurring villains, or really any supporting characters aside from Wheezy Winks. It's all about Plastic Man himself.

>hometown
Mammoth City exists, not sure if it was established by Cole, but that's been meant to be his Gotham or Metropolis.
>recurring villains
Not right away, but later he gets a bunch of kooky villains that could be easily brought back.
>any supporting characters aside from Woozy Winks
I mean, there was a chief of police I think.
But even if it wasn't much, new writers could always just make something up.

My only idea for a Plastic Man series is bringing back Doctor Dome and writing him as a mix of Aku, Dr. Drakken, and Dr. Doofenshmirtz.
Also give him Doctor Doom powers that he uses in mostly silly and petty ways.

To be honest, I'm not sure what modern writers could with Plastic Man, but I'm also not too familiar with GOOD modern writers who can bring the best out of that character. Even with a good writer, it's admittedly a big ask to expect Plastic Man to carry a solo comic for more than a couple issues or show for more than one season these days.

Aside from that, maybe cameo appearances are for the best. I know Plastic Man had a Ruby-Spears animated TV series from the late 70's to the early 80's, but it's been ages since he had his own show. I noticed he made cameo appearances in stuff like Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Injustice, and Harley Quinn Fartacular: Silent Butt Deadly. Most of those cameos were fine, but that cameo in Harley Quinn was kinda awkward because he was reduced to be her fart-containment suit.

I remember an episode of TBaTB with a ray gave people Plastic Man’s powers. The cheap answer would be to say that Ramona was hit and the device was destroyed before she could be cured. Aside from that, I’ve always found it interesting that the supposed commercial chemicals that gave Eel his powers were never reused or replicated to give others the same powers, so it could be a situation in which Ramona is subjected to the chemicals as well either intentionally or against her will.

Plastic Man as a solo character is at his most compelling when he’s a man trying to better himself. he’s not perfect, but he’s trying his best.
I also want to bring up Injustice Plas. he’s like the jester of the justice league. funny, but also willing to ask the hard questions and call people out on their bullshit. as a man who’s been on both sides of the law, Plastic Man embodies the benefits of mercy and rehabilitation. under a more authoritarian and brutal Justice League, he’d be dead. but he’s not. he was given chances to turn his life around, and eventually he did, and the world is a better place for having him.

>DC has never really made an honest attempt at trying to give Patrick "Eel" O'Brian his own corner of the DC Universe.
He's better as an accessory to the universe as a whole. Plastic Man's presence in any DC Universe or JL story shifts the tone. Plus, he was great in Brave and the Bold, Justice League Action, and all those little shorts he had. It's honestly more good content than most DC c-listers get.

I think he could but only in an animated format. Not in a live action sense. Wasn't there supposed to be a Plastic Man movie or did that get canned?

There’s been talks of a Plastic Man movie for the new DCU directed by Darren Aronofsky and played as some kind of body horror thriller but I don’t know how much of that concept has been repurposed for the Clay Face movie instead.
We were also supposed to get an adult-animation show with Leslie Jones as a genderbended (and probably race-bended) Plastic Man. Probably for the best that one never made it out of development.

sounds awful. Plastic Man’s body horror should be present but unstated.

It definitely was, though I think the concept would have been close enough to the Clay Face movie we’re getting so I think it may have been repurposed with a different shapeshifter to match the intended tone. I imagine Gunn would want to include Plastic Man in an adaptation of the Terrifics or something with his brand of humor

Everyone just kinda assumes it because of this tweet he made and it's exactly the type of team Gunn loves to write about so much.
I think it was just a hint for the Justice Gang, considering they also have matching uniforms and half of the Terrifics team.

He'd be fucking terrifying in live action. Luffy and Reed still look weird despite years of technological progress in film. Someone as wacky as Plas just cannot be depicted well in the real world. If Gunn is planning on using him, I hope for the love of god that it'll be for a cartoon.

IIRC one comic someone tried on his wife, but it turned her into Lady Granite instead, so at least modern canon is that the chemical's reaction on people is unpredictable.

I finally saw Superman last night and thought they did a pretty good job with presenting Metamorpho and Engineer's body changing powers. Fundamentally I don't think it would be too hard to portray Plastic Man's abilities. Though it may have to be in small doses.

those two aren't changing the human parts of their bodies. their facial features aren't painted onto a featureless mass sculpted into the shape of a human. their bodies don't constantly contort to the tune of rubbery squeaking. what works for them isn't going to work for plastic man.
