Why does becoming a mutant in the X-man make you only about being a mutant ?

Could a good comic book writer make Kamala a mutant and member of the X-Men while still being Kamala / Ms Marvel the superhero fangirl ? Instead having her be a generic X-Men concern with X-Men concerns? I mean she was on Secret Warriors and human team and she still cared about the innocent normal people.

Because being a mutant is all they have, ever noticed how the only mutants that can get adventures out of the X-Men are the ones with more than just the mutant struggle in their lore?
