Retconning it so she has to use Gumball's body to kiss Darwin when they have kissed before and making her over 300 were both mistakes. Out of all the characters during the six season run, I hated only Carrie. And I liked her a lot too at first but I met my limit with her when she started to get hooked onto Darwin.
It always felt like if you looked at any little thing she got a bit funny like, then you can discover some sort of inconsistency or something that clashes horribly with the established world.
And right now I'm willing to let DarwinxCarrie thing going on to cook along, but I think my only real attachment to it is seeing what happens to Darwin more than Carrie because their relationship just seems so cold. That this goofball that's so open to love is stuck with something that is almost effectively unable to because physically she basically can't, and that we can also see what happens to her when her emotions get the best of her. I get that it's a wild antics cartoon and all but that doesn't really feel like enough of a justification here? It almost feels like a really sour inverse of Nicole and Richard and I think that is what is bugging me.
It just feels more like a tool to harass people who are autistic enough to pay attention to details than something that is being written genuinely at times, but I guess with time I'll know what direction the writers want to go in.

That relationship conflict is probably the point. I don't hate Carrie, but I feel like they could have gotten a similar conflict across if they actually went with Darwin getting with Teri instead. You have someone so open to love getting with someone that is a germaphobe about everything without the same implications and issues you need to write around with Carwin. It also would have served better for the characters' roles. Carrie has a bunch of interesting lore and plot roles that get thrown aside to be mostly just Darwin's girlfriend while Teri didn't have nearly as much going for her as more of a one note character. The role might have helped Teri be more interesting by forcing her to workaround her germaphobia.

Yeah, but that's not how Ben works with his non-Watterson characters. Each such character had been assigned a very specific trait and either it worked well in tandem with Gumball and Darwin as a plot device, or it didn't. Carrie and Bobert managed to pull it off easily due to one being a doorway into all things spooky/supernatural and the either being all about technology. Writing Teri stuff would be doable, but it would also require nuance and out-of-the-box thinking, which seems to be in short supply in writers departament. At the end of the day it was just easier for Ben to pick up ghost girl as Darwin's gf instead of fleshing out paper bear properly.

Yeah I'm basically realizing that Carwin's conflict is their lack intimacy, both physically and emotionally. They got together, but Carrie hasn't exactly had her "The Shell" moment (if anything it feels like Carrie's become more emotionally closed off since The Matchmaker), or maybe it's just Darwin coming to realize that she might never have her moment and it might be about him changing in some way. This is all just guess work on my end though because the show can turn in any direction it wants, but right now Carwin just feels toxic as hell and it feels very intentional. Only time will tell what gets done.
And it's interesting that you bring up Teri because The Decisions made me realize that Darwin really fucked her up over the course of the show, accidentally or not, since season 2. That it almost makes me want to say that she was legitimately an option for Darwin at some point, and all this one-sided bullying was meant to be the subtle hint before Carrie was settled as the one for him. I even think when Teri stands in line for the kissing booth in The Mess is a hint of this dropped idea. And I only say that because Darwin and Carrie weren't really explored until now and that what you're saying with Teri could have been happening in season 7 right now in some alternate universe. Like there's been a huge delay of what Carwin really was like until a few days ago but this could have all been happening with Teri's hypochondriac habits.
