Hartman writes 2D characters with few redeeming qualities, except for maybe when one is the designated underdog of their show. When it comes to his shows, it's less about who you like and more about who find the least abhorrent.

Well they’re complementary perspectives. Sam’s rebelliousness is about how she wants to be perceived so she’s less sympathetic, but she also acts altruistically. Valerie works for a better life for herself so she has true compassion, but all she wants to do is get away from being fucked over personally so she rarely shows it. Danny could simply date both and cover his bases.
