EGS you live your life in a bubble, nothing bad will every happen to you, but you will never be allowed to grow beyond a toddler. Any attempts to move beyond the safe bubble, will result in you losing 30 IQ points.

Kind of dark when you think about about it. By the end of Graces birthday, the universe basically replaced the personality of the entire cast with a more infantile, bunch that would never even hint a hurting someone.

Since we are well past the point where the comic goes downhill. I will talk about the one thing I thing EGS did legitimately good.

That being the Nanase and Ellen, and their dynamic. Nanase was always good even from her introduction fight, to dumping Elliot right of the bat.

Ellen's creation and how she acted in her brief bit of insanity, was also well good. Ellen introducing herself to Nanase, was a great start to their relationship.

Then you Ellen, inviting Susan to join the movie night. a good way to showcase that Ellen is making a point to be different from Eliot. Ellen swatting at Nanase's hair to get her to open up, and smile. Both another thing Eliot would never do, and the moment where Nanase start trying to justify her attraction to Ellen. Thou I still think Ellen should have kept the pheromones.

Then finally Nanase talking to Susan and finally realizing their is no excuse, she is attracted to girls, and Ellen Specifically. And the follow all the way to kiss at the party, while a bit to over explain in parts was good.

Of all EGS early Nanase, and Ellen are the only thing good enough to be worthy of a reread.

I know, but that is entirely on Sirlek, and Sirlek pure stupidity. Reminder Box knows Sirlek they put Magus in touch with each other, and his resources. So Box would know everything the moment the monsters attacked Raven, So their where just 2 outcomes. Either Raven dies, in which case the ultra powerful immortal, will track you down, and spend a few tousand years slow torturing Sirlek to death. Or Pandora dies, and the Raven spends however long to track Sirlek down an kill him. Either way you gain an enemy personality invested in killing you. And with how magic works they will get a spell to track you down and kill you specifically

For a group so obsessed with immortality the vamps of EGS are very bad at avoiding final death. They should be able to manage their food with just animals.

And personal theory Vamp are the proto form of of immortals. They just need to figure out how to subsist on ambient magic alone, to make the leap to immortal status. That would explain why all the immortals try and kill vamp the moment they find them. They don't want any more people they have to deal with forever.

The secondary characters are largely better than the main cast now, I think in large part because Dan doesn't know what to do with his highschool-aged cast members anymore.
The further away a given character is from high school, the more likely they are to still be interesting in modern EGS.

Said it a prior thread, the best end point, is Graces birthday party. That is where all the original plot points, and ideas of the comic where finished. Everybody gets an arc, the single best story, and character interactions, of the entire comic. The story is fairly fast paced and does not waste to much time on irreverent dialogue. And most of all nobody is dumbed down or Flanderized. All in all it was a good 4 years worth of comics. And frankly better art style as well.

Going forward even from the first panel of the next arc, every character personality is being scrubbed clean of any hint of edge, sarcasm, and especially anger/aggression. Honestly all the characters have very little to differentiate from each other anymore. With what little differences being pretty much entirely around who they want to date.

A bunch of characters get upset for petty moralistic reasons that would never happen in the pre-birthday party days and we have to sit through several panels of autistic detailing of exactly why so-and-so is being a bad person and needs to do better. Explain to him that this is an expression of love, people reading through the comic's past in daily dumps like this, and let him see outside of his echo chamber that people LIKE the idea and characters of EGS but that he has gotten too deep on the weeds on his autism about explaining everything and needs to get back to fast paced stories that either develop characters/their relationships or have action/transformations in them, WITHOUT making everyone obsesses about how a given piece of magic WORKS for pages and pages at a time.

At the time that I make this post, the last handful of pages live on site are, I shit you not, about characters who know the abilities and history of a specific magic item in Tedd's basement verbally relaying all of this information to a new character who doesn't know about it, her offering to help them with it, and being told "not right now, wait until this arbitrary event has happened first because people need to be focused on that first for now."
It's literally just a repetition of information we *already know*. You should never spend more than a couple panels doing a reminder like that. There are paragraphs of text from the author under every posted page talking about whats going on in the story and references back to previous pages ANYWAY, if you are afraid the audience has forgotten an important detail just put the explanation of the detail THERE. Don't waste a week of real time on the recap of an item that isn't even important yet.

I think Dan wants to avoid Ranma 1/2 because EGS does gender flipping, which is something the Ranma character does, and turning into an animal, which is something at least one of the EGS characters does. Yeah. It's good, but not excellent. It redoes what was already done, and the 90s animation looked better. The new Ranma brightens things up, but it didn't need to. I just dislike Cheerleadra and the secret identity forms a lot. Because Elliot is given this problem where he HAS to use his power to turn into other people and enjoy it in order for it to evolve. And what happens? He agonizes about it for a comic and is handed a solution pulled in from out of nowhere. Uptight prude Elliot having to actually become cute and pretty and hot chicks and enjoy being them leading to him loosening up and attaining some kind of gooner transcendence that THEN lets him become Cheerleadra (who should not have looked like Fem-Elliot in a Supergirl outfit but her own design) would have been better. I don't know, the whole thing was just poorly done to me. A problem came up and is very quickly dealt with with no effort on Elliot's part and him not having to do a damn thing to compromise being Mr. Squeaky Clean Boy Scout which is indicative of the fluffy safety the writing is in most of the time unless it's an actual action scene.

Also, the specific TF version of having to transform into other people ala Mystique and such is my specific fetish and Dan never really caters to it. All we really get is poof transormations in a sketchbook or something.

Liz is straight up the most maddeningly underused character in the entire series and there's no real reason why. Ashley's spot in the group could have easily gone to her and she could have taken the more snarky and cynical (but good-hearted) spot that Susan originally had. I would say the comic is still good from a "binging it from the archive" perspective. Where it really goes downhill is trying to follow it in real time. It takes way too long to do anything with his pacing issues and need to overexplain on top of the fact that he will frequently take breaks. It's not uncommon to get really into something that's happening and then Dan goes: "The main story comic will resume in a month and a half." or he'll just miss an update once or twice, followed by that.

I've even taken 1-2 IRL year breaks from the comic, come back hoping to binge a bunch of it and get caught up/closure on the arc I've left off only to finish everything in about 15 minutes and find out there were several long hiatuses on top of pacing issues. It's sort of like Hunter X Hunter in that way.

I feel like if he stopped the News Paper side stories and just focused on the comic for awhile things would improve.

That being said: My gut wants me to tell you things fall off after Death Sentence or Family Tree, because those were the last time I remember being like: "Heck yeah! I can't wait to see what happens next." Immediately after that we get Identity and So A Date At The Mall which is where I started holding my breath waiting for things to pick up again and that was in 2014-2015. So, we've got about 3-4 years of comic left before things get stale.

It came out while I was coincidentally binging the original for the first time and seeing the side by side comparisons disgusted me. The time could've been better spent just adapting the rest of the manga as a continuation of the original and ending it properly.

If they had ignored all of the skipped chapters and picked up from where the OVAs left off, they could have reached the end of the manga in one season. If they were betting on getting 2-3 seasons of the remake, then they could've adapted all of the skipped chapters as well, and ended it properly. If they were hoping to get as many seasons as the original then they could have adapted all of the missing chapters through the end of the manga WITH filler.

Yeah, but what does that matter? He doesn't publish his comic in a magazine, he doesn't have advertisers or a network to worry about, he's not trying to get it sold as a tv show, and it's not even marketed to kids or anything. While I'm sure he's happy to get new readers the comic seems to be in a state of: "It already got all the readers it's going to get and is now privately funded by them." He can just give the people what they want and they will love him for it. Closing the Dojo was a mistake and the end of an era. I feel like Dan was just reaching a weird point in his life (the end of your 20's) and started feeling like his sillier influecnes were cringe and tried quietly putting them to bed here, but it was a mistake. Okay, lets thought experiment this out: lets say you get to play the role of editor and go back into the guts of EGS and prune characters. Remove the cast bloat and cut things down to the absolute core. Characters don't have to be deleted entirely so long as they are clearly defined as side characters that either only exist in their secondary zones (like, Greg isn't a main character but he doesn't need to be deleted from the comic. He is allowed to exist in his own little corner of the world) or they are around for a bit and then once their role int he story is done they move on.

Its safe to say that Tedd and Elliot are non-negotiable. EGS is their story when it comes down to it, everyone else has to earn their place but those two are reserved seating.

I think you drop Sarah, Diane, Rhoda and Ashley entirely. They pad things out but they don't actually ADD anything, not even Sarah despite being there from the start. Sarah's only purpose really is to be 'the girl' and Elliot's kinda-girlfriend that he makes no romantic moves on. You can very easily just have that be Nanase at the start, since they already had a bit of romantic tension, and then the combination of Elliot being dense and indecisive and Nanase being a lesbian is why that never went anywhere. Elliot ends up having stronger chemistry with Susan after the fact.

Justin is a good character, and I think the comic is better off with him in it, but he isn't main cast material. He's a side character that occasionally fills out a scene.

In what I am sure will be a controversial move: I don't think that Grace should stick around for long after they deal with Damien. She has a strong arc and story relevance for the first part of the story, but she has not actually done anything to justify her inclusion in the comic besides 'be cute' for years and years. Let her leave and spend time with her weird animal family, she can come back and visit Tedd on special occasions but she should be a guest star that shows up to help sometimes, not a default member of the cast. Sometimes less is more.

This means that your core cast, after Sister, ends up with Ellen x Nanase, Elliot and Susan having good chemistry, Tedd mostly solo but with a long distance girlfriend in the form of Grace as a 6th ranger that shows up from time to time. Those 5 become your core cast, focus remains fairly tight on them.
Amusing, while this wasn't intended this does also leave room for Tedd/Elliot to have romantic tension via female forms as well. Which probably won't go anywhere but can still be teased.

I feel like this cuts down the cast list to a vastly more manageable scale and loses almost nothing.

She is someone to be cute around Tedd so he has someone to talk to. Thats it. If the comic was willing to let her do stuff that would be one thing, but after her arc resolved she's just been filler.

I do agree you could probably condolence Sarah and Susan, especially if you move Nanase to the same school. It hard to drop Sarah, as Susan needs someone to bounce off.
And early on Tedd and Elliot cannot work for that.

Swap Sarah's personality for Catalina or Diane.
You get someone contrasting to bounce off Susan and the boys, and I think Elliot could have banged both before moving on to Susan.
