Rise of the Guardians was based on a long in gestation book series that launched maybe a year before the film's release. While the movie dumped a lot of the original space fantasy aspects of some of the characters, they did end up injecting a lot of Movie Jack back into the book series with the last novel being delayed over a year for rewrites.

That aside, Rise of the Guardians failed because we never really got a bit action set piece of all the guardians using their abilities to fight together. Would like to see Dreamworks re-visit it Puss in Boots style.
