Personally, I thought they fell in love too fast. While I understand Hugo thinking Rita is cool shit, there wasn't much of a given reason why she liked him so much that she got pissed off enough to spit in disgust when he wanted to go home.

That's very fair, actually. If the small studio had more money and time, there would be more scenes of the 2 getting to like each other. Though the writer was clearly going for "wub at first sight", so no matter what it would be too fast for some people, even with more scenes.
