The reactor itself doesn’t do anything other than act as an extreme storage space for his wrath. It’s empty but basically acts like a NLF plot device. It’s Asura’s wrath that gives him all that power which was why Yasha gave him the dried out Mantra Reactor, so his body doesn’t immediately get vaporized trying to contain all that mantra and wrath he can generate.

Before the Mantra Reactor, I very much doubt it. I think that’s partly why before the fight sequence starts, you see Asura meditating under the waterfall. He was probably trying to learn how it works and channeling his wrath with it. When he goes Destructor, I believe that’s when he gets that huge stat buff.
