Terrible taste. Animal Man is revolutionary, a terrific serialized comic that understands the DC Universe better than anything before it. It's the best of the british invasion books post Moore, arguably better than his Swamp Thing.
>Identity Crisis is a laughably bad comic.
Not true. Meltzer's prose and pacing is terrific. His command of DC history is some of the best ever, the characters are honest, the dynamics are compelling. It's a blast to read.

There is more in a single issue of Morrison's GL than there is in an entire six issues of Vendetti or Humphries. Vendetti and Humphries have put out some great work, I love Hawkman and Dial H For Hero, very good books. The high point of the Johns run is Rebirth, the Sinestro Corps and Blackest Night stories are good but become bloated and bogged down by tie ins. Also, both are just action figure smash stories, not much substance to fill the amount of space they took up.

>what's wrong with Identity Crisis?
Plenty. Contriving for the superheroes to be so ineffectual, constructing an incredibly stupid murder mystery, and the constant, platitudinous narration make it a frustratingly bad read. All in all, it's a poor application of some of the themes of comics like Watchmen and The Killing Joke to the Justice League while DiDio also had his greasy hands in it.
>It's like Heroes in Crisis, but done right.
It's almost as bad. Both had ruinous editorial meddling, though Meltzer is a better writer than King.

Anonymous No.149696602

NTA. I don't like Identity Crisis at all, but part of the problem comes from trying to do a murder mystery involving characters who have too expansive of a toolkit when together. Yeah, they could have figured it out, and relatively quickly at that, and there's not really a way around it with the kind if story that they wanted to tell.

It's like how these characters having secret identities with our level of technology isn't feasible, let alone with the tech of the setting. However, we accept it for the sake of it being enjoyable and to give variety in the personal lives of the character.

Is that satisfying? No, but it is what it is.

1. Tom Strong - I've read and reread this series so many times. Not perfect, but probably the closest to what I want from the medium. I'm including Terrific Tales in with this, if only for the wonderful Jonni Future stories, and I suppose Terra Obscura counts since it's technically a spin-off.

2. The Shadow Strikes! - This would be #1 if it was more consistent. The worst issues are genuinely bad, but the majority of them are virtually perfect. I wish it could have lasted even longer. The Shadow is one of those things that deserves to always be in publication in comics. If only it could get the same treatment as Conan...

3. Conan #0-50 (Dark Horse) - The best single volume of the character. See also: LITERALLY PERFECT ART.

4. Conan by Roy Thomas - Not as consistent as the above, but maybe overall better because of how much of it there is.

5. Planetary - I don't even like Warren Ellis, but this is just about the best shit ever. It'd have ranked higher if not for it feeling a tad "thin" (for lack of a better term) content-wise.

6. Xenozoic Tales / Cadillacs & Dinosaurs - By arguably the most underrated writer/artist in comics history. Another comic that, like Tom Strong, was practically made for me. Loved the arcade game, too!

7. Camelot 3000 - Possibly the greatest art in comics history and just an unapologetically fun concept.

8. Hawks of Outremer - Possibly the most underrated miniseries of the 2010s. An adaptation of a Robert E. Howard story executed to ultraviolent perfection.

9. Mage - The first volume might be my favorite story in comics. I'd rank this much higher if the followup volumes were anywhere near as good.

10. XIII - Yeah, the later volumes are dogshit, but you can always stop before it goes down the crapper. The early volumes are the most compelling French comic of all time easily.

Gardner Fox probably was amongst the most creative and imaginative writers in an era where there were many other good writers immediately during or right after (Otto Binder, Hamilton, etc.)

The reason he's not as well known as some others, particularly among younger and mostly 'modern' material readers is that there's no collection being shoved into our faces (e.g. Captain America by So and So or Thor by So and So) and he didn't relentless self-promote himself like Stan Lee nor were their people relentlessly promoting him - e.g. Moore, Millar (both were also self-promoting whores but both, spelling aside, were also relentless promoted), Cereal Lord, etc. - and even DC collects him without promoting him specifically as an author (e.g. they are Silver Age Omnis of say Adam Strange, or Justice League of America, versus it being "Gardner Fox's Adam Strange" the way DC will do for Mark Waid, or Johns on say their Wally West collections.

What would be the point of that? Anons aren't doing this as a job, they're not getting paid to review things for general audiences or the judges at an awards ceremony. Surely the whole point of doing something like this in the context of a 4chan thread is to talk about the comics you personally like?

Honorable mentions:
>Amazing Spider-Man #121-122 (Gerry Conway and Gil Kane)
>Wrinkles (Paco Roca)
>A Small Killing (Alan Moore and Oscar Zarate)
>Duck Avenger New Adventures (Alessandro Sisti, Ezio Sisto, Claudio Sciarrone, Max Monteduro)
>The Incal (Alejandro Jodorowsky and MΕ“bius)

I would also include Rowlf by Richard Corben, but it's been a very recent read of mine, so I don't want to be influenced by recency bias.

Shut up retard, nobodfy expects you to make an objective top 10 list, ever. You, no matter who you are, will never have the authority to do so. Yoiu can only give out your favorites and you can be roasted for having mediocrity in your top 10. You nerds are so autistic...

If you want to read superhero comics then read whatever you think looks interesting. Ignore anyone who tries to make it more complicated than that.

The intent and significance of other stuff might go unrecognized or unappreciated without some familiarity first.
The following should work as transition material.

For DC: Justice League International by Keith Giffin and J. M. DeMatteis and Major Bummer by John Arcudi and Doug Mahnke.

For Marvel: The Superior Foes of Spider-Man by Nick Spencer and Steve Lieber and Nextwave by Warren Ellis and Stuart Immonen.
