Jar-Jar isn't insufferable because he's for kids, he's insufferable because he was written by an idiot who doesn't know how to write a good comic relief character. Anakin isn't annoying because he's a protagonist/self-insert for kids, he's annoying because he was written to be utterly unlikable. I would argue that if Lucas was writing for adults, he'd just fuck it up in a different way. You can get from the OT interviews that he always sucked at comedy and dialogues.
