How to differentiate capeshit and capekino?
What makes a comic superhero capeshit or capekino?

So far the only unanimously capekino I can think of is Spider-Man, or is he also capeshit? Are all superhero comics inherently capeshit?

All superhero comics are capeshit regardless of quality.

Capeshit: Run of the mill superhero tales that just spin their wheels to keep a character or property in use, or comics that employ gimmicks without trying to make it an enjoyable or interesting experience, or comics made with disdain towards the audience without presenting any kind of argument or entertainment, or a comic with significant editorial meddling meant to steer corporate property in a desired direction, or nostalgia bait and continuity wank comics without much else going on, or a comic that is made in earnest but ultimately fails due to a lack of skill, time, and/or resources. Most comics fall under this label, especially the average hero/team titles and event comics.

Capekino: A superhero comic that tries and succeeds to be a full-fledged story with a sense of well-roundedness and passion, or a comic that is meant to entertain while delivering an earnest story and is very good at it, and is sound writing and art wise. Very rare.

I use capeshit as a general term for all superhero media, whether good or bad.

If you have to ask you already can't determine it.

>Capekino: the books that I like
>Capeshit: the book that you like

It's pretty simple.

>What makes a comic superhero capeshit or capekino?
It's an ironic term and people will use it to bash the superhero genre as a whole but my personal metrics are:
>Cape Shit
1) Unfunny quips thrown at you every minute because the author doesn't believe in the source material.
2) Inconsistent tone the story wants to be taken seriously but also turn off your brain, the defenders of capeshit can't decide if the story is modern mythology or simple popcorn entertainment and will alternate between those points of view sometimes in the same conversation.
3) Over reliance on visual spectacle and flair to the exclusion of everything else.
>Cape Kino
1) The author obviously believes in the source material lets the story play out naturally with a good balance of serious and humorous moments.
2) Consistent themes, the story knows what it's about and it communicates these ideas in an interesting and engaging way. The moments that are supposed to hit hard actually do.
3) Smart use of visual effects that enhances the story rather than dragging it down.

If it's good it's capekino, if it's bad it's capeshit. Simple as.

>Capeshit
Takes its genre tropes for granted and makes no attempt to write a cohesive story.
The main character is suddenly bestowed with powers and without any contemplation, immediately decides to don a colourful spandex outfit and fight crime.
The main villain, despite having no problems in his life, decides to become a villain and then declares the main character his arch rival after only one minor interaction.

Cape as a genre includes things like costumes, rogues galleries, a sense of justice, but unless you justify the presence of those tropes in your story, if you just simply include them without a reason, your story will be shit.
All the best cape stories go to great lengths to give their protagonists a reason to fight crime, a reason to hide their identity, and even a reason for why it looks the way it does.

Pic related, not capekino
