Indians used to have a decent reputation because they didn't have internet over there. All anyone knew about them were
>Taj Mahal
>Funny accent
>Worships multiple gods
>Cows are sacred
But then they got access to the internet and the worst of the worst just came flooding in. That and the rise of scam calls and subsequently scam call baiters becoming more popular exposed more and more people to what India is like.
I don't think Apu getting removed hurt India as much as it exposed how important it was for India not to be significantly exposed to the outside world was for their reputation. It wasn't like everyone had a huge cap in their heads about how to think of Indians after he was cut. They still would have assumed they were like Apu. It's that an overwhelming image to the contrary, one rooted in reality as opposed to an animated show, made its presence known.
